Wow! This was a surprise for me. But it was just so good. The characters were great, and I liked how the book was set up. It’s beautifully written, and It’s a very well done historical fiction novel.

This book was absolutely amazing. It told a terrifying story, and left me in a daze. I loved each character, with their stories, and unique personality, and I was horrified by the brutal story of World War 2. This book told an unforgettable story, and was written so well, that you could imagine it.

In middle school I read "Between Shades of Gray," also by Ruta Sepetys, so when I saw recently that she'd released a historical fiction book about WWII, I knew I had to read it. I know all my WWII historical fiction book girlies can relate.
But oh my god. I read this on an eBook but ordered the paperback because I just want to have it in my collection. I usually kind of hate the split POV structure but this was so so so good. The relationships between the characters is raw and real, and the way they try to hide the secrets of their pasts from this new found family is so human. Highly recommend. I think this convinced me to re-read more of Sepetys' previous books.

Beautiful story. I am blown away by the fact that I had never heard of the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff.

Florian “Fate is a hunter. Its barrel pressed against my forehead. “
Joana “Guilt is a hunter. I was its hostage.”
Emilia “Shame is a hunter. My shame was all around me now.”
Alfred “Fear is a hunter. It encircles is when we are unarmed and least expect it.”

Joana Vilkas, your daughter, your sister. She is salt to the sea.

To think that this is the deadliest disaster in maritime history and that I had never been taught this is incredibly heartbreaking.

NOTHING IS BLACK AND WHITE.

Two back to back amazing reads of Ruta Sepetys’s work. I’ll be searching for more from this author.
