I threw in the towel at 49.1% of the way in. Having said that, I may give it another go with a paper or kindle copy, rather than the audio version provided by Netgalley. The reader is wonderful and I enjoyed her narration. And I've always enjoyed Alex North prior to this. But, this. Utterly confusing (and from a couple other reviews, it doesn't seem to be just me.) The author can throw in all the determinism he wants. Saying all things are as they were destined to be does not change the fact that the entire story hinges on a coincidence that is just too big for me to swallow. Maybe it is eventually explained satisfactorily, but at 72, I'm too old to spend this much time with a whole cast of characters I pretty much dislike.
I barely finished this one. I had high hopes for this one, but this just didn’t do it for me. I don’t mind books with multiple timelines, but I found this one hard to follow. I also didn’t find any of the characters that deep or interesting. Plot was not horrible, but it wasn’t developed in a way that did it justice.
Usually I love Alex North novels, but this was my first DNF of the year. I tried multiple times to get into this one and just couldn’t. Too slow, not enough action or drama, and not an interesting storyline for me.
“The Angel Maker” was a wild combination of philosophy, serial killer inheritances, and the intricacies of relationships and the human mind. I particularly appreciate the element of determinism and how North tied it into the entire story line, it worked so well.
My only complaint is the build up is a bit slow, but it was worth the read to see the concept in all its entirety. From start to finish, this book is a puzzle that relies on finding connections in order to be pieced together.
I’d recommend it to any thriller fans that appreciate the darker concepts of the human mind while also solving a good mystery.

A fast-paced read which ultimately delivered less than expected. Chris Shaw was brutally attacked as a child, leaving his sister Katie regretting her choices on that day well into adulthood. Decades later, the two are estranged, with Chris going down a path of addiction and petty crime. When he goes missing, Katie sees her chance to atone for what she couldn't do in her childhood.
Meanwhile, a wealthy and eccentric philosophy professor is found murdered, seemingly having foretold his own death. When Chris is discovered to be one of the last people to see him alive, the hunt is on to locate him and uncover the truth. While this novel tries to be more than your average thriller by incorporating occult and mystic elements, those concepts were not particularly well developed and didn't add much to the novel.

Honestly this one switched POV so many times and had so many characters that I just was lost for 80% of it. I liked how it started and the potential but had so many moving factors and open ends that took too long to come together.

Not my favorite Alex North book. Definitely slower and redundant at some points. I liked the premise of the story and the intertwining past and present events.
I had high hopes for this book, and idk if it’s because I listened to the audiobook, but it just dragged on for me. All of the different characters confused me. I feel like the premise of this book was promising but the execution of the story was not. I’m super disappointed.
I absolutely love Alex North’s other books but this one sort of fell flat for me. It took me about a month and a half to finish because it failed to really hook me in like his other books have. I think the key issue is that there is way too much going on and way too many concepts to wrap your head around. The reader has to learn about determinism and its different perceptions/applications while also trying to keep up with constantly shifting timelines. We also have characters who have different names so if you take your time with this book you’re bound to forget who is being referenced when. There was a lot going on and while it did get good when everything fell together, everything else along the way was just a bit too much work.
pretty solid but not my favorite of his so far. i felt like i was expecting more horror/scary and got more thriller/crime which is perfectly fine just not what i expected so i was a bit disappointed. still overall a fun & decently quick read in the car for the road
