This book was kind of a hot mess, but at the same time I got into it? There was too much going on for Alex North to really make it all great. Many characters with differing points of view, some related, some not, some with secrets that some characters know and others don’t, some philosophy thrown in that done believe and some don’t… really, the sacrifice was that I didn’t care much about the characters because I spent too much time organizing them in my head. But the story was entertaining. It’s still a disappointing read after the other two Alex North books I’ve read, but I’m glad I had some fun reading it.

In true form, Alex North has given us a serpentine cast of characters and plot. Each aspect of the characters and how they play into the intricate plot slots together piece by piece.
Many of the characters are evil, some are evil due to circumstances. Past and current lives entwine to weave a story full of dark secrets, heinous events, and puzzle pieces forced together in a dark web only this author can weave.
I enjoyed this book. While there were some slower parts, the overall book was entertaining and kept me wondering where every plot point would land.

(1.5) had potential to be good but the execution is so very, very dull, plodding along at glacial speed with really no interesting characters to be invested in (outside of chris, who is painfully underused.) the philosophical elements are handed with all the deftness of a sledgehammer and feel forced into the story rather than assisting in the plot. just tries to do way too much, and goes about it very shallowly. absolute slog of a read
I like Alex North’s writing and was pleasantly surprised by his book, The Shadows. Therefore, I went into this one optimistic, especially after reading the summary.
While it was intriguing and well-written, this book was also kind of meh. I liked how everything tied together throughout, but I also felt like I had more questions than answers. Things were mentioned and never explained, and certainly not resolved. I also kind of hated the ending? All in all, a very middle-grade meh.

I have enjoyed every other Alex North book and this one was no different. There was a lot to follow with overlapping timelines and characters but that made it a more interesting read. I truly didn't know how the story was going to go until the end. A really phenomenal thriller with twists and turns!
