🏃‍♀️💨 Shortcut Book Challenge 2023

Hosted by bibilly

6 participants, 106 books added

Starts: Wednesday, 01 February 2023

Ends: Sunday, 31 December 2023

Because life is too short and we're all anxious about it.

The SBC was originally a monthly challenge I hosted in the first three months of 2022, but since I am a restless reader who loves short books, I turned it into something more permanent in the following semester. The idea then was to host the challenge at least once a year, from December to January, plus a mid year edition if I had the time. However, that was based on my own schedule, which will probably change a lot in 2023. So now the SBC is limited to one edition per year. This way we can all choose when and where to fit it into our schedules. The main goal is still to finish/start the reading year strong or catch up somewhere in the middle, thus avoiding the reading slump anxiety and lefting the rest of the year for those big books we do want to read.

The challenge is to read 20 short books in order to either:
  • speed up your annual reading challenge;
  • tackle your tbr shelf or an author's backlist starting by the shortest books on it;
  • read more books from your favorite genres/authors;
  • read more out of your comfort zone or just read more in general without committing to long ass books.

As for the exact length, different readers have different definitions of short books. For me, they need to be less than 350 pages or 4000 kindle positions long, but it all depends on my mood and how dense the writing probably is. You can also choose to read books that you think will be very easy and quick to finish, regardless of their length. I'd say to go for those you can read "in one sitting" or one day (or during day-to-day breaks) and that you'll hardly want to dnf. That way you can easily tackle your tbr on the weekend, on vacation or on your way to work.

Or you can ignore all that and just use the challenge for your personal readathons by doing, for example, 5 prompts in a week in each quarter of the year, or all the 20 in a month before the year ends.

RECS: you can find recs on my shelf for best short books. Maybe I'll also post my TBR here later.

I'm also hosting challenges for my fantasy and SciFi TBR's, Dark Academia, audiobooks, standalones, Everything Everywhere All at Once and BTS' solos. And here's my personal guide on how to read more.
