The Vegetarian :) .
.
“This was the body of a beautiful young woman, conventionally an object of desire, and yet it was a body from which all desire had been eliminated.” - Han Kang. .
.
Have you ever come across a book that’s mysterious and haunting? It’s unique and completely different from the books that I’ve read this year so far. What happens when you let go of the materialistic things in the world? The story focuses on the life of Yeong-hye who suddenly turns into a vegetarian after having a nightmare. She let’s go of all her feelings and becomes just a shell. She refuses all needs of modern life and rebels against her family who take turns to feed her. She refuses to eat and considers herself to be part of nature. She craves only for the sun and water like a tree, not even afraid of death. .
.
This novel is a perfect mix of dark and light sides of life. I would rate it 4.5/5. Not all books capture such intense human emotions but Han Kang nailed it!

Purple Hibiscus 🌺 .

“Masculinity is a hard, small cage, and we put boys inside this cage” - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. .

Every woman / girl should read this book. Would you want to know why? It’s because girls are often said what to do and what not to do. They are chained by the shackles of religion, society and fear to such an extent that they feel wrong things are right. I finished reading this book in two days and I read it fiercely.

Kambili and her brother Jaja, are brought up in an orthodox catholic family whose father is a force to reckon with. They are burdened with responsibilities from a very young age to top the class, not to smile, dress a certain way and even to not talk much. When Kambili and Jaja visit their Aunt’s village to spend vacations, they realise how wrong their father has been all their lives. How it’s so easy to smile, talk and even fall in love. A blindfold drop from their eyes where they experience a different world than the one they have been living in. This book also talks about Kambili exploring her sensuality and it’s so well written. I would rate it 5/5. .

A wonderful book like this deserves recognition and love.

“I know I am out of time. I am a poet, my clock ticks on words, and on quills bleeding more than rattles of ambitious swords” - Mukhpreet Singh Khurana. .
.
Thank you @mukhpreetkhurana for being kind enough to send me this copy. .
There’s truly one word to describe this piece of art. Awe-inspiring! I have never been a person who’d pick a collection of poems and prose over a novel. Somehow I made the right decision to read this beautiful work. It’s not everyday that you find words that soothe your aching soul. Mister Khurana has definitely struck a chord by putting all his wonderful thoughts onto paper. This is a book of 170 odd pages that in my opinion, will soon be recited by every true abstract lover. It captures a whirlwind of emotions that envelops every human. .

Have you ever come across a book that you often carry in your bag, it’s pages crumpled by reading it too much? This is the one for me. These are the days when people hardly try to rhyme their poems but this book has brought back the subtle usage of classic poetry back. I’ve said it once but I’ll say it again- This book was made to be on shelves amongst the bestsellers and over the years, it might just be under the classics section :)

I would rate it 5/5.

Avatar of protector. .
.
Thank you @author_chetan for this review copy! .

This book falls under fantasy fiction category which revolves around Indian mythology. Kalki, a normal teenager discovers that he’s the next Avatar of Lord Vishnu. His simple life is turned upside down and the burden of saving Earth is put on his shoulders. The plot is interesting but could have been executed in a better way. There were grammatical errors which was missed by the editor. The sentences were extremely simple which didn’t have much lustre. The characters were predictable as I read further. I believe there might be a sequel to this novel. The entire concept of including Mahabharata story and characters in the book is a commendable idea.

If you’re interested in a laid back read that you can finish in a day or two, then this is the one for you. I’d rate it 2.8/5.

No heroes :) .
.
.
I had the privilege of getting the copy from the author himself. The story is direct and clear. Michael, a 26 year old guy had a wonderful father (Martial) who was hero in a uniform. A cop. When Martial dies, he leaves behind a note to Michael talking about his secret mission of hunting down criminals. And then Michael is diagnosed with cancer and decides to die being a legend. The story talks about his difficulties in dealing with the disease and bringing down criminals before he dies. The book is of 27 chapters and the initial ones gets dragged a bit but picks up pace later. It’s a decent read but I do feel that it could have had a few more turns and twists. Few parts made me wonder if that’d actually happen in real life. I’d rate it 3.2/5.

“A lot of your problems would vanish if you change how you think about it” - Shivam. .

A big thank you to the author for sending a free copy in exchange of an honest review. .

I have never been big on self help books but I have to admit, this is the best one I’ve read in years! Life can get us low and gloomy but what do we do when that happens? The author explains his mantras to tackle life head-on. We fail in exams, not find our dream job or even lose the love of our lives. And when that happens, what matters the most to keep us going? This book is written with ease and reflects the problems that we face everyday. As you turn the pages and read along, there are certain moments that makes you feel that you can handle life the way it comes. .
.
Life in all its glory, it’s failure, the ups and downs - everything you need to accept and deal with it, it’s right here in this book. To me personally, this was a much needed read at this point in my life.

I would rate it 4/5.

“The greatest lie ever told about love is that it sets you free” - Zadie Smith.

I am surprised that I even finished this novel. The plot was fairly simple which I personally felt wasn’t going anywhere. The characters, however were unique. The details of the family in the novel are so beautifully described and honest. The author talks about two families in crisis, their relationships with those around them and also about marriage. What happens when a black family lives in a white neighbourhood? How do they handle the stares and differences? It’s not everyday that you stumble across a book that’s this refreshing. I had very mixed feelings post reading the novel because the story failed to develop a sense of connection. Though the characters in the book take the medal, the story however could have been executed a little better.

I would rate it 3.5/5

All that is unseen.

What happens when that faint line between imagination and reality is smudged? Would you be able to stop yourself from falling into darkness?

Thanks to the author for sending over this review copy :) .

This is the story of Arav who is an intelligent writer at a very young age. He meets a beautiful girl called Nasia and they instantly hit it off. But how long can Arav hide his imaginary friend from Nasia? The story gave me intense Fight Club feels but this one had its own twists and turns. It delivers a message about how serious mental disorders can be and how coping with it can be tough.
.
.
There were however a few drawbacks like repetitive grammatical errors. The language was quite casual with the usage of few words overly often. The plot was interesting but could have been executed better.
.
.
However, it’s commendable that a 21 year old has penned down this book..

I would rate it 2.8/5.
