Such a fantastic start to the series. The characters are compelling and relatable, and the setting is fascinating. I wanted more and more world building. A really great and easy read, reminds me of a Studio Ghibli film in book form. I really recommend the audiobook, as the narrator did a fantastic job bringing each character to life.

Just like the first one, this book take a few chapters to really get into the meat and potatoes. Once it does though, it really sucks you in. The author does a fantastic job of sprinkling in little details that seem inconsequential at the time of first reading but come rushing back to you as the mystery unravels. I also think the way the author handles romance is really refreshing and honest. The way characters express their feelings is genuinely awkward and stumbling, but in a way that feels relatable and funny.

I hate to say I didn’t enjoy this one nearly as much as the first two. I went into it really hopeful because the first few chapters indicate a new adventurous direction for Ophelia, but that almost immediately gets shut down with the whole training academy angle.

The new characters aren’t nearly as compelling as those in clairdelune and Ophelia seems to have stagnated if not regressed as a character. Nearly every decision she makes in this book made me roll my eyes. It’s like she didn’t learn a thing from all her time at the court and is somehow more timid and indecisive rather than confident. The development of the romance plot is like pulling teeth.

The overall God and the Other plot develops rather slowly in this one, which indicates to me that the last book will probably be very dense and rushed to tie off all the loose ends. I’m hopeful it will be at least for fun than this one. I think this book could have edited to half its length and added to the begging of the last book.

I bought this at the airport and honestly didn’t expect much but I was instantly hooked. It’s a great easy read that is very well written and speaks to a lot of the frustration and oppression women still face today. I don’t know that I would call it a thriller or even a mystery but for going in blind, I really enjoyed it.
