I thought this book was good even though it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. This was sold to me as a murder mystery, and even though the book does open with the finding of a body, but it’s much more a character study of the people surrounding The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. I don’t typically enjoy these slower-paced, more character driven stories, but I liked this one!
This is both one of Sanderson‘s earlier novels and the first non-storm light archive book of his that I’ve read. Which I note only because I was so curious what I would think of his writing, and it really shouldn’t be a surprise to me that I enjoyed it so much. This is such a good standalone fantasy book. There’s lots of political scheming, a mystery to solve, and an arranged marriage, which gives us the tiniest little bit of romance (which I greatly appreciate). And though you can tell that Sanderson’s writing has matured over the years, he still manages to create a rich and complex world with well developed characters.
It had been a while since I read a thriller, so when I saw someone I follow’s 5 star review for this, I couldn’t resist picking it up. This book was very atmospheric and perfectly suited for the gray, rainy weather we’ve had here recently! I think this makes for an excellent fall/winter read. I really enjoyed the author’s writing and the voice of the FMC. I did guess the ending pretty early on, but I don’t typically hold that against the book as I do read a lot of thrillers. That being said, I did feel like this book had some plot holes. Nothing bad enough to impede my enjoyment of it, but enough that I was left with a lot of questions at the end. Overall, a quick and eerie read!
This is such a unique book! A political fight spanning centuries and traveling through time would have been enough to hook me, but throw in the most beautiful love story woven through it all and I was an absolute goner. I really loved the author’s writing style, it really made the book for me. When it comes to time travel in books I’m typically happy to just accept however the author says it works- I’m certainly no scientist- but it did get a little confusing for me toward the end. I’m also not sure that there weren’t a few plot holes. But even with that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it!
Oh my god, this book! This is everything I want in a second-chance romance and then some! A romantic vineyard, forced proximity, and an ending so perfect I couldn’t help but cry? How could I give this anything but 5 stars? I loved how both MCs really had to grow and develop for their romance to get a second chance, they didn’t just fall back together. I adore Jessica Joyce’s writing and I will definitely be reading any in every new release from her. 🤍
I’ve heard nothing but good things about Jessica Joyce’s novels, and I’m honestly annoyed with myself that I waited this long to read one. This was so good! I loved every aspect of this- the road trip, the grandmother’s letters, the grandpa trying to be a sneaky matchmaker, and especially the academic rivals-to-lovers. I also enjoyed how even though this was very much a rom-com, there was still a lot of emotional depth and character development from the FMC. This book pulled on my heartstrings on one page and made me laugh out loud on the next. I think it’s safe to say I’ve found a new favorite author!
I very unintentionally read the majority of this book on Thanksgiving, and wow, what a day to have the reminder of all the atrocities that indigenous people have endured. This is such a powerful and important memoir. It’s a story about family, love, power, agency, and so much more. I’m giving this five stars for the emotional impact it made on me, and because I know I’ll be thinking about it for the rest of my life. I highly recommend that you give this a read, even if you don’t typically read nonfiction!
