It's a slow book, at least at the beginning, and the high amount of new words and concepts that the reader has to learn to know what is each person, their many names, surnames and aliases makes it tricky to follow at first.

In fact, I'd say it's basically a prologue for the rest of the trilogy, as 'the Rose' doesn't appear till the very end, after all the political games.

I was a bit lost for most of the story, and yet I couldn't put it down, and I have already started the second book with eagerness.

I recommend it!

Did not finish book. Stopped at 55%.
There are many reasons why I DNF'd this book. In no particular order:
- I couldn't feel any connection to any character. I genuinely didn't care, which is an awful thing to say about a book on slavery.
- I got lost in the story several times, because it seemed to randomly jump around.
- I couldn't grasp the magical part of the book. It was just confusing.
- I disliked the writing style because to me it felt like swimming though jelly.
