i tried to read this for the first time 8 months ago, but it wasn't clicking for me. i tried again this month and i absolutely adored this story and couldn't stop reading it. i found myself picking up this book whenever i had free time, desperately seeking the company of these characters that i embraced as friends. i guess it was a matter of timing, funnily enough. looking back, maybe it was too soon for me to read this, so it makes sense why i couldn't make it past 3 chapters. i had to be who i am now to enjoy this book, and the book was waiting for the me that i am now to tell its story.

this is a story about timing, but it's also about grief. and it made me think and reflect on feelings that i had buried deep within me for a long time. now i can smile when i think that, despite it all, it's the love and the good memories that stay.

ashley poston did it again with this one. a beautiful story about losing one of the most important people in your life, the healing process that comes with it, and the love story that happened in between. it was an emotional journey and i was really happy to read it. and glad that this book came to me at the right time.

this book was good until it's half mark, but as soon as the main character got together with her love interest, she started to be extra annoying talking about sex all the time (really? you don't have other topics to talk about without making any sort of sex implications?) – there was one scene where we got an explicit description of how she got oh so horny in the middle of a curling game and I found that very uncomfortable and cringey to read that I just wanted to skip that whole chapter entirely.

also can we talk about how selfish she was towards her sister? by the end of the book, when gemma finally stops to listen to what kiersten has to say, kiersten says she likes this version of gemma and you know what gemma says? "me too". you mean the version of yourself that isn't all about you???? after you spent 80% of the book running to your sister to problem dump when she has to care about her 3 children while you do nothing in return for her? you forgot to babysit for her because you were having sex with your new boyfriend (this is a "trope" i absolutely hate)!!! I know this is supposed to be a "flawed" main character but I'm sorry, there were some things I just couldn't overlook.

also, the ending felt rushed – I wanted her to have more time in her current reality before she tried to get together with the real dax. it felt too easy for her to just go back, fall into his arms, say she loves him and then just add a 6 month time skip. if you like spicy scenes and constant talk about sex, then this one is for you, i guess.

me apeguei tanto ao piranesi ao longo desse livro que não consegui deixar de sentir uma certa melancolia ao terminar de ler... esse definitivamente é um daqueles livros especiais e vai ficar na minha cabeça por um tempo

I’m glad I finally got to read this after having it on my TBR for so long! While I was expecting a typical mystery, the fact that it was also a ghost story pleasantly surprised me.

Ultimately, I felt like the true main characters of this book were indeed Beth and Lily. Their complex and intriguing story captivated me, to the point where I wouldn’t have minded if the book focused solely on them, leaving out Shea’s parts. Beth and Lily were more interesting and well-developed compared to Shea, who seemed to serve mainly as a vehicle to tell their story rather than being a central character herself.

The ending left me disappointed because I wanted at least one final POV from Beth to understand her thoughts as she was almost caught at the end — I’m guessing not knowing is intentional from the author’s part, but still. But kudos to the author for the haunted house scenes, because they actually gave me chills!
