From the moment I saw this book around I knew I needed to read it and from the very first pages I knew this was going to be a book to stay with me long after I’ve finished it.
Crying in H Mart is a memoir that is not for the faint hearted. It is brutal as Michelle deals with the death of her mother but also beautiful and even cozy at times since it explored the role of Korean food in the authors life.
Many times I couldn’t hold my tears, even though I come from a different culture there’s many things I could relate to special the mother and daughter relationship.
What a journey! I specially enjoyed how by the end the author embraced even more korean culture and coincidentally today I went with my mother to a Korean restaurant as I finished this book.

▪️As the first American to ever study in North Korea, Jeppesen tells his experience of living, traveling and studying in the hermit kingdom. This book is a portrait of the country in the Kim Jong Un era.
▪️From the beginning it felt like I too was embarking on this journey and the feeling stayed until the very end. I attribute that to Jeppesen’s unpretentious writing style, making the reader an insider instead of an outsider to this experience.
▪️Although I’ve already learned so much about North Korea from other books, this one brought so many unique insights and perspectives that I would recommend as a great first book if you are interested in getting to know more.
▪️Although by now I don’t get as surprised as before by some of the facts, still some were shocking.
▪️Most of the places the author visited are not included in the general North Korea tours so it was interesting to be able to go there with him even if in a literary way.
▪️Definitely one of the best books I’ve read about North Korea and certainly one of the best I’ve read this year!
The need to read this book came after watching Michelle’s documentary on Netflix. I wanted to know more even though I’m not much into politics but still it wasn’t really about that, rather about making positive changes that matter in the long run. Being compassionate towards others no matter their backgrounds and giving them a voice.
I’ve been savoring this book since February, slowly reading it. Giving it time. I had no rush to get through it because I knew this wasn’t a light read.
This book was like a breath of fresh air. I already liked Michelle but after reading Becoming, she truly is a extraordinary lady. Every word, every phrase mattered and was inspiring, hopeful. Definitely felt like I was going through a journey with her and feeling every emotion. I enjoyed how raw it was.
Definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year. I recommend this to everyone, politics aside. A must read!!

▪️The book follows four friends from college days till adulthood as they have to come to terms with their mistakes.
▪️It addresses themes such as friendship, love, guilt, betrayal, privilege, racism, activism, sexual harassment and parenthood.
▪️The first pages I was still trying to adapt to the writer’s style but once I got the hang of it I really enjoyed the college part although I didn’t think there was much depth to the friendship and the only characters I could feel attached to was Ji Sun and Alice.
▪️Past 60% my interest in the book started to slowly die and by the end I was just dragging myself to read it.
▪️I just wished the mistakes that the characters committed were more explored in terms of making them accountable and not like throw under the rug.
▪️I’m still happy to have given this book a chance since I never seen around.
