Last One to Die by Cynthia Murphy

A lot of this is with the fact that it was an audiobook, and my brain doesn’t truly register a lot of an audiobook, it just picks up basic plot and basic character relationships. It did however seem like a book I would’ve possibly given a 3.5 or a 4 if I had read it normally.
I liked the end plot twist, I was able to predict who ended up being the killer but I didn’t really expect any of the other factors surrounding it.
All in all well done book, it was an okay listen, but I wouldn’t put the effort in to reread it and actually understand the whole plot.

Unfortunately when I started this book, I was in a huge reading slump, and I’m partly taking that into account.
But… this book was amazing. It’s not comparable to The House In The Cerulean Sea, even though I try to compare them in my head. I love the character development of all the characters, andomg that part when Hugo and Wallace finally kissed was AMAZING. So beautifully built up and I was screaming.

I was so sad because I loved The Whispering Dark and I thought I would love this book based on the premise.
Honestly, I think I was excited for the plot, but the whole book was focused so heavily on the characters that I lost the plot. I’m usually a character driven person, and for whatever reason I didn’t connect a lot to these characters.
When I finished the book, there was no excitement or “woah that just happened,” it was more like a “okay, so it’s over now.”

It was certainly okay.
For being a young adult book, the way it was written made it feel like a middle grade. Despite mentions of murder and possession, I felt like I was reading a book that was meant for a younger audience.
In general, I’ve read books like this before, and it was alright. I can see someone else really liking this book, but it wasn’t for me.

I don’t really know how to review this one, and that’s the best I can explain it.
I actually loved the characters, and the acceptance that not everyone has to be perfect and you can do so many things wrong but that doesn’t make you any less of a person was refreshing. That message was wonderful.
As far as the plot, it was definitely okay, and obviously what the author did made a lot of sense. Like, a lot of sense. At the same time, I would have loved to see it be a character we actually knew, because I feel likethe murderer being Enko didn’t evoke any feelings of shock or betrayal, and I would’ve loved to see that. Even though it doesn’t make sense, it would have been interesting to see a character i connected with and cared about to be the murderer.

I just finished this in one sitting. Best 2 and a half hours of my life.
But WTFFFFFF
I thought I was going to be going into a lighthearted book and good LORD was I wrong
I felt like crying at least 5 separate times and Aled you have my entire heart oml
Aled almost going back home with his mother was like the worst thing to ever happen, ever. I’m also not going to talk about the part of the book where Daniel and Frances were pretty much entirely ghosted because that HURTED
and Daniel wondering if Aled just felt bad for him and that’s why they were kissing why would you do thatttttt two seconds away from BAWLING
anyway safe to say I will be emotionally destroyed for at least a solid week… good luck to me

Admittedly, I don’t remember the first book at all, and I should have refreshed my memory of what happened. I went in with no attachment to the characters, and that’s likely a problem here.
The place where the book started also didn’t make any sense to me. I feel like aftershe returns from AiLong, that’s when the next book shouldve actually started. That would’ve made the first book a lot longer and the second shorter, but it’s a better place to start a new book.
I think being attached to the characters is what would’ve saved me though. I wasn’t attached to Shiori, or Takkan, and I had no knowledge of their previous relationship. I didn’t remember the Nameless Queen(or whatever her name was), and I didn’t care at all about Shiori’s motivations. That would’ve helped this story a lot for me, so it’s definitely my fault for most of this review.

Naturally, it was good. I liked the story, love the characters. Something about it just didn’t click as well for me.
I did just read Immortality, which also has a girl in the late 18th/early 19th century, wanting to become a surgeon. Immortality was AMAZING, and reading those books back to back didn’t help.
I LOVED the first one, it remains one of my favorite books to this day, and I think the difference is that there just wasn’t very much adventure or action. Sure, there was a little bit of action, but it wasn’t often or as dramatic.
It was good, but nothing compared to the first one.
