A thrilling read. A bit of a locked room mystery, in the sense of the mystery taking place on an island. Anyone who likes mystery thrillers this one is a must. Check out trigger warnings before reading as some of this books and the whole series is very graphic.

The story follows 4 generations of a family, and the harrows that the war in Palestine brings to their door. It is not a true story but it reads like one, showing the effects of war on families and communities.

**Very Spoilery Rant**
I am so mad after reading this because this book is still so right about how things are perceived when it comes to sexual assault. Too many people still opt for the boys will be boys and the responsibility is on girls and women to not draw attention to themselves.
The main character is this book is Emma and promiscuous fun loving 18 year old, who is also a bit mean and quite insecure underneath all her bravado. She is not a likeable character but this book does a fantastic job of showing the reader that just because someone dresses or acts a certain ways does not mean that they are “Asking For It”. There are photos, it is plain to see that what happen to Emma was assault and yet Emma is the bad guy. She is labelled a slut etc. and all her friends drop her.
This is so wrong but is the reality far too often.

The only possible down side to these books is that they are very very much Irish humour so if you don’t have some sort of Irish connections you may not really get it.

I know that Matt Haig has had his own mental health battles and he used his experiences wonderfully in writing this book. This is my first book by him but I seriously doubt it will be the last.
The writing is also very good and I
flew through reading it. The audiobook version is also very well done.
Moderate: Suicide
Minor: Addiction, Animal death, and Death of parent
