I LOVED this book. It was easy to read and digestible. It covered a lot of difficult topics while remaining relatively hopeful (very difficult these days). It’s extremely interesting to discover and read the political strategic and rhetoric that has worked (and continues to work) to distract the public from the real problems. This was informative and helps me understand the history and dynamic of America much better. Not many things have changed but we can learn a lot from this book.

You need a bit of an economic background to understand this book. It’s not an introduction to the topic that’s for sure. It is very information heavy and reads mostly like a textbook with a few personal stories sprinkled throughout the book. It was painful to finish but I’m glad I did. The last chapter wraps it all up nicely in reference to the COVID pandemic. If you choose to read this book, prepare to have to force yourself through it.

Although I was skeptical of this book as I read the first couple of pages, by the end I was overcome by the emotion, depth, and intensity of this story. As soon as you think this book is about one thing, it switches up and becomes about something else. Nothing is ever perfectly separated or compartmentalized, doing justice to the complicated topics in this book. It had been a while since I’ve read some thing so completely unrelated to my experiences that made me feel seen, that made me appreciate the grey areas in life. This book is comforting but challenging - despite what the back of the cover may imply.

This collection of short stories - although written well before I was born - tells the story of women around the world. As a Muslim Syrian-American woman reading these stories, I struggled to understand all the lingo. However, I found the themes of the stories still communicable. Without any satisfying, perfectly tied-up ending, these stories introduce fluctuation into the values we think we hold vehemently. There are a wide range of stories covering a wide range of topics including political independence, disability, death, standing up for your values, lesbianism, shame, and social pressure. Reading this collection requires contemplation. I was eager to finish the book because I was so intrigued and captivated, but in hindsight this book is meant to be read slowly and over time with much consideration and deliberation.

While reading, half the book seemed boring to me and the other half was engaging, interesting, and provided a new lens through which to view the world. I waited a couple days to write a review and I’m glad I did - because after reading this book my understanding and appreciation for the human body grew tremendously. I could understand more medical conversations between my parents (both medical professionals). Every movement and inexplicable, random pain started to make a little more sense. I definitely recommend this book as a narrative nonfiction novel to those looking to get into nonfiction without all the jargon.

The author takes an extremely old and ancient and well-known story and brings it into the modern era - keeping the most interesting and shocking elements of Greek mythology intact to entice the reader. The book is fun but emotional. It can bring you to tears if you let it. You find yourself loving the characters - something much harder to do in the traditional telling of the story in the Iliad. It is a unique and creative perspective much appreciated.

While I usually avoid “war books,” this is a book about much more than war. Even 60 years after it was published, its themes and critiques are still relevant. You can always find a Catch 22. Although women were portrayed poorly and as objects in the novel, it spoke more to the contradiction of male attitudes and actions towards women rather than their intrinsic value. Yossarian is both a lovable and disposable character that you somehow find yourself deeply understanding at the end of the novel. While there is no traditional happy ending, this book leaves you contemplating everything and finding Catch 22 all around you. It challenges you to critically analyze the systems and people around you. Human spirit and preserverence will prevail and restore hope for a better life.

My mom who is a Muslim Syrian immigrant recommended me this novel when I told her I started dating a Greek Orthodox boy. I thought it was a very interesting way to tell a very complicated love story. It took me a while to warm up to the book but I enjoyed reading it. It’s an easy read even though it touches on some difficult topics.
