Forget Me Not (Summit Lake Thriller Book #1) by Kristen Middleton

Forget Me Not was a good discovery! I got this book for free on this year's Stuff Your Kindle Day, so I wasn't expecting anything.
It's a medium-paced mystery/thriller with short chapters (always a plus ❤️).

Some would say it's told in dual POV, but I disagree. Yes there are a couple chapters from the killer's point of view, but barely. We pretty much only see Amanda's point of view. I found the plot to be well written, although more chapters from the stalker's point of view would have been a nice touch.

I enjoyed reading this book. The short chapters make it entertaining and I always wanted to know what was happening next. I didn't think there was any really dull moment. You follow along as the stalker gets progressively worse and as he leaves out clues and tests the limits.

Although I could see some things coming, I didn't expect the ending at all. I hesitated between rating this a 3.75 or 4 stars, but the fact I wasn't expecting the plot twist makes it a 4 ⭐.

Forget Me Not is a duology. I'll check out book 2 but I'm not 100% sure I'll read it just yet. If you're not a fan of duologies, this could very well be read as a stand alone.

I had the chance to read an ARC of The Guest by B.A. Paris, coming up on February 20th, 2024.

I love B.A. Paris. I read all her other books and they were all between 4 and 5 stars. She mainly writes psychological thrillers.

The Guest is more of a mystery. Just like her other books, it's written in short chapters that are super easy to read. It's a domestic suspense, told from a dual point of view. This book felt pretty different from everything else she has written. I still enjoyed it, but it's really not what I expected.

I feel like it was quite a slow start. It only started to pick up around 50% of the book, to get to a medium pace. The characters also felt kind of flat. They were lacking the dimensions her characters usually have.
I wasn't expecting the final twist, but at the same time, although I was a little surprised, I wasn't shocked. I feel like the twist came too late or it was too rushed.

I still enjoyed B.A. Paris' writing and I was still into the story. It's still an entertaining read, and you want to know what's gonna happen next. I just felt like it was lacking the oomph her books usually have.
In any way, I'll still keep recommending her to anyone asking! 🤍

Thank you to Netgalley, St Martins Press, and B.A Paris for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

3.75

The main reason why I didn't go above 3.75 is that, although I enjoyed reading it and didn't expect the ending, I still feel like the mystery part was lacking a little bit. Of course, the mystery revolved around the main plot (who's the killer?), but it's not prominent. I feel the addiction part is prevalent in the story. As in, the emotional part is the main one, and mystery is the subplot. Therefore, I wouldn't go around and recommend it to mystery readers. I would however, recommend it to people who read more emotional books or any other genre, as this one could be a good initiation to mystery.

Also, I'm not saying it's bad, on the contrary! It's very interesting and you still want to know what happens next, or what happened in the past. You get attached to the characters. But from a mystery perspective, it's not optimal. To anyone planning on reading it, I enjoyed it and I'm sure you will too!

I like the development of the investigation and the medical field so it's a good mix! However, I feel like a lot of things were rushed and dont necessarily make sense. There were some incoherences that annoyed me. The main character was also annoying to me. I'm guessing it was the point, but I feel like I was still supposed to get attached to him or feel for him, but I didn't.
I still enjoyed reading it and the short chapters make it easy to read in one sitting. You still want to know what's gonna happen next. BUT, would I recommend it? Meh, not necessarily. Maybe to people who like small mysteries, not too complicated, or who are looking for a "mouthwash" type of book. It's not really the book l'd recommend to someone who thoroughly enjoys thrillers and mysteries.
It's a 5 book series, but I don't feel invested enough to keep going. I'll stop here for now, but who knows, maybe pick it up again some other time!
All The Lies by Nicola Sanders

4.5

Once again, Nicola Sanders delivered. I've read her other book, Don't Let Her Stay, which was a 5 star read for me.

All The Lies is a psychological thriller. Fast-paced with short chapters, which I love, you'll just fly through the book.

Nicola Sanders writes in such a way that you're totally immersed in the story. You relate to the characters and feel for them. I've felt all the emotions you'd expect from a psychological thriller. I was scared, relieved, anxious, happy and frustrated.

The short, suspense-packed chapters keep you hooked from the start. You won't want to put the book down.

HOWEVER, I did take a ½ star away, because although I love the writing and the author, I have to admit it didn't feel as suspenseful as it could have been throughout the book. There were parts where I wasn't sure where the story was going, and some plot holes or, I guess, things that seem a little unrealistic.  BUT, overall, it was still interesting enough for me to want to keep going.

I'll keep recommending this author, as I believe that even with the little flaws, I still really liked the book and it made me FEEL emotions I wouldn't have felt if I didn't enjoy it.

I overall enjoyed reading the book. It's seperated in 6 parts, and in different timelines and point of views. It's an interesting story, told like a true crime. I liked the court element. But, I feel like the "plot twist" wasn't so much of a twist. I can't say I expected it from the start, but progressively, I could see it coming.  I guess I'd say that the revelation was not surprising. I'd still recommend the book for people who are 't used to ready thrillers/mysteries and want to get into it.

I'm not sure if I expected the ending or not but I enjoyed it! I think it wrapped everything up nicely and it was well executed

I really didn't like this book. I found the ending to be predictable and not satisfying at all. I'm French, and the whole thing was far-fetched and full of mistakes. The French isn't accurate at all, and I found it ridiculous to use a lot of mistaken french, to only end up translating it in the same sentence. I found it super cringe and I ended up just skimming though the final 100is pages

So... I don't know if I should have taken a break before getting into this last book, but I didn't enjoy it that much. Again, the ending feels too happy for my taste. Some parts of the book could have been cut short. It was quite slow and not much happened

Well... this boring was really boring. It's more of a character-building book. Nothing much happens. Unless you have FOMO, you could easily skip it. I haven't read the next book yet, but pretty sure whatever "important" thing happened in this book, will be referenced back in the next one
