Is there such a thing as a good sociopath?
Thank you, Minotaur Books, for the gifted copy of All the Way Gone by Joanna Schaffhausen {partner}
Genre: Mystery:
Format: 📖
Pub Date:
Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆
Let me preface this review by saying that I read the first book of this series but did not read books two and three. While reading the fourth book, I never felt like I had missed any previous storylines.
I loved the first book, so I was so excited to dive into book four. Thementioned’s writing style was easy, and the storyline was addicting—it kept me guessing and actually helped to bring me out of my reading slump. I also found the concept of good sociopaths to be an interesting addition to the genre, and it brought out the psychology nerd in me.
However, two things just can’t be overlooked, and ultimately, I reduced the book from a 4.5 star to a 3.5.
1. The ending had too much going on. While surprising, I had guessed one of the twists reasonably early on. It was fun to see how it played out, though. But, there was another twist and then another and one more. It just felt like too much and left me very underwhelmed and confused.
2. Nick. What an awful human being. I don’t understand why the author would bring him and Annalisa back together, but it really brought the story down. She took a strong FMC and made her seem weak and dependent on the man who had mistreated her time and time again. Several things occurred between the two characters that brought the ick factor to the story, and it was disappointing to read.
🔀 Twisty
🤮 Icky storyline between FMC & her husband
🕵🏽♀️ Private Investigation
✌🏼Two stories in one
🗣️ Multiple POV
I recommend reading All the Way Gone if you’re looking for an addictive thriller to keep you eagerly flipping the pages. Just ignore all the unnecessary drama sprinkled throughout the book 🫠

“Do you know what happens to women who go into creepy basements? Murder! Murder happens to women who go into creepy basements.”
I’ve read all of the books in this series, and I think Finlay Donovan is Killing It and Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice might be my two favorites.
There were a few moments that had me rolling my eyes because I genuinely do not understand how she keeps getting herself into these situations—and she’s dating a cop! But the eye-roll moments were quickly followed by laughter because this book was hilarious.
As usual, I loved Finlay and Vero’s easy relationship and banter. I’ve said this before, but I started this series for the mystery and have stayed around for the friendship. Both characters bring so much to the book, but I can’t get enough of them.
🎲 Atlantic City
💋 Relationship switch

😂 Hilarious
📚 Must read previous three books
Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice was such a fun read, and I can’t wait for book five, especially after the end of this one! If you want to read this book, you need to read the previous three as we pick up where the last page of Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun ended.

Three Weekends + Four Friends
Thank you, Dutton Books, for the gifted copy of Serendipity by Becky Chaldean {partner}
Genre: Fiction

I wasn’t sure what I would find in the pages of Serendipity - I just knew I was drawn toward the title and the beautifully illustrated cover. What I found inside was a nostalgia-filled story that reminded me of the friendships I still carry in my heart even though we’ve all gone our separate ways.
The setting of Fire Island provided the perfect setting and added an almost magical feel. Yes, the friends still went out drinking at night, but during the day, they became the sand castle-building kids of their youth.
While I didn’t love the ending, I tried not to let that shadow my overall enjoyment of the story. I think a lot of people will enjoy the ending, but it just wasn’t for me.
☀️The setting
🗣️ Multiple POV’s
🫶🏼 A love letter to friendship
👏🏼 Perfect summer reading
🤷🏽♀️ The ending was just okay
I recommend reading Serendipity if you’re looking for a light summer read to take to the pool, lake, or beach!

Laura Griffin is one of those hidden gems of the book world. I stumbled across her a few years ago when I signed up for a book tour; honestly, I didn’t expect much from the story. I figured it would be entertaining and a good fluff read. But wow, I was surprised. Since then, I have sought out her books and thoroughly enjoyed every single one.
I started Liar’s Point on Saturday evening and finished it by Monday morning—I would’ve finished by Sunday, but my Kindle needed to be charged, and I fell asleep waiting 🫠 Liar’s Point featured so many of the characters I’ve encountered in the series, and it did take me a minute to remind myself who was who and which story they were associated with, but then I was all set.
The story itself was addicting. I love the police procedural element that is added to Griffin’s books - it feels so natural and really adds to the story without it feeling over the top. Then there was the addition of the romance between two of the detectives, and I was sold! There’s nothing about the book that made me roll my eyes or think it was cheesy. It’s just an all-around entertaining read that kept me eagerly turning the pages until the very end.

I highly recommend this series, but you would need to start it from the beginning, as I think you would miss out on a lot of the character-building.

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I read my first Mary Kay Andrews book, and now I am such a fan of her books. They always have just the right amount of everything—romance, mystery, friendship, found family, and, of course, a little family drama. Summers at the Saint was no exception.
With every new book from MKA, I promise myself that I will savor every page. But there was just something about Summers at the Saint that had me devouring page after page. I stayed up too late and woke up eager to start reading where I left off. It was just one of those stories that provided the perfect distraction from life, and I didn’t want it to end.

Like Garvin's last novel, Music of Bees, Crow Talk was full of stunning descriptions of birds and nature. Garvin is talented at bringing the world around us to life with vivid details and hypnotic prose. The story itself was beautiful, and the cover of Crow Talk might be my favorite cover for this year 🤩
However, I didn't love Crow Talk as much as I wanted to. Again, it was beautiful, and I loved learning about birds (specifically crows), but the characters in the story fell a little flat for me.
I especially had a hard time with Anne and her decisions towards the end of the book relating to her husband. It was indicative of the setting/time of the book, but it still bothered me. Then, I also struggled with the author's decision regarding Anne's son, Aiden. I understand that every story is very different, but the overall ending of the book just felt like it all came together too perfectly and was rushed.

“Life is a prickly pear. It’s always going to be a combination of beauty and art, no matter how hard you try to protect yourself from the hard parts. There is no way to avoid pain.”
Well, I did not expect to sob while reading this book, but it wasn’t the onions I was chopping for dinner that had me crying. Here We Go Again has officially been added to my favorites list for the year.
Sure, this was a romance - I loved Logan and Rosemary, but Here We Go Again was so much more than their story. It was full of so much heart. I don’t remember the last book that gave me a character to love like I did their English teacher, Joe.
He taught Rosemary and Logan during their impressionable teenage years and kept them in his orbit for the following years. For his last lesson, he took them on a road trip to show them how important it is to take advantage of the one precious life that they have to live. Just thinking about their book now has me tearing up.

"In a world where you can choose anger or empathy, always choose empathy."
Abby Jimenez is a true gem of the book world. And with each new title she releases, I find new characters to fall in love with. There's just something so inherently relaxing about reading her books, yet she always manages to teach me something new about myself and the people I love. Do you have a favorite from Abby Jimenez?
Just for the Summer was no different from all her other books (Part of Your World is still my favorite, btw), and I loved every minute spent listening to the audio. But my only hiccup with JFTS is that I may have loved the MMC, Justin, a little too much. What do I mean by that? Well, I loved him so much that I actually *wished* that Emma and he would not end up together. But why??? She was not good enough (and a smidge too selfish) for him. While I understand she had a lot going on and displayed quite a bit of character growth, it wasn't enough to change my feelings about her. And that is totally a me thing, and I can't help it!
😍 Justin
👏🏼 Mental Health Representation

📖 Read the author's note
Just for the Summer could be read as a standalone, but reading the other two books ( Part of Your World and Yours Truly) will give you some character backstory!

Oh, this book! What Happened to Nina had my attention from the first chapter to the last sentence.
Because it was a full-cast narration, I opted to listen to the audio, and the narrators did a phenomenal job of adding just the right amount of suspicion, determination, and emotion to their voices. But, for all of you who aren't into audiobooks, the print version would be just as well done.
Devral McTiernan created a propulsive plot that made me feel empathetic toward all the characters (well, minus one). While reading, I had such a mixture of feelings toward each character—especially Simon's mom and dad. I tried to put myself in each of their shoes and imagine how I would react had this happened to me. The characters all felt real to me and came to life as the story unfolded.

"I've always found endings harder than beginnings, goodbyes harder than hellos. When I was a kid, I thought that life and death were two sides of the same door and that when you died, there would be a long hallway in the afterlife where you would pass the doors of all the lives you'd lived before."
I struggle to classify How to End a Love Story as a romance. There was romance (hello spice), but it was more of a look at how Grant and Helen grew following the death of Helen's sister. There were themes of past trauma, family relationships, cultural identity, grief, and personal growth. But it never gave me the complete romance vibes—which may be why I knocked it down a star.
One of the areas I honestly struggled with was that the spice in the book took something away from the story. In all their intimate moments, only one or two felt well-placed. By the way, I never shy away from an open-door romance, but for those scenes to have a meaningful impact on the story, they must be well-placed, and those scenes in this book didn't feel that way.
But, in looking at the story as a whole (not as a romance), I appreciated the author's tender care in showing the long-term impact that suicide can have on a family. Towards the end, Helen writes a letter to her sister that brought me to tears; it was beautiful, heartbreaking, and poignant.
