While browsing the list of soon-to-publish books on the PRH site, I stumbled across An Enchanting Case of Spirits and thought it sounded like just the book I sought. I’m so glad I decided to try it because it was such a fun and lighthearted read full of outstanding and well-developed characters.

Yes, there were themes of friendship, the death of a spouse, family, loss, and learning to love again, but it never felt too heavy. Many moments offered a comic reprieve, and even the ghosts that Alyssa communicated with left me chuckling at times.

An Enchanting Case of Spirits was the perfect cozy mystery for me, and I sincerely hope there is more to come from Alyssa and her friends!

The Reappearance of Rachel Price || Review

β€œThe people who loved you, the ones who cared, they would always come back. Sometimes, they even came back from the dead.”

I was thrilled to have a chance to grab the audio for this book from PRH Audio. I listened to the whole A Good Girls Guide to Murder series on audio and really loved the way it kept me entertained, and I was in the mood for a fast-paced mystery!

From the start of the book, I was hooked because I knew what the MC didn’t knowβ€”her mom was alive and coming back. I don’t often read the synopsis of books right before I read them for fear of spoilers, buuuuut the title of this one kind of gives it away πŸ€ͺ What I didn’t know was at what point Rachel Price would make her return and what that would mean for the rest of the story.

Once Rachel Price was back on the scene, the story took off and only lagged in a *few* places. There was a lot of mystery, drama, some romance, witty remarks, and just enough twists to keep me hooked.

πŸ’¨ Quick read
πŸŽ₯ True crime documentary
πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ Character development
πŸ”€ Twisty
πŸ™ŒπŸΌ New take on the "missing" trope

Overall, The Reappearance of Rachel Price was highly enjoyable. It kept me guessing until the end and provided the fast-paced mystery I sought.

β€œThere’s nothing out there in the dark, that isn’t out there in the day.”

Ginny Myers Sain is so gifted at adding just the right amount of intrigue to her novels. Last year, I read (and enjoyed) Dark and Shallow Lie. Both of these books by Sain, had that same Deep South, monsters lurking under the surface vibes which made it hard to put down.

Unfortunately, One Last Breath fell a little short for me. It became overly repetitive and drug a bit in the middled. I also didn’t find the MC’s to be that likable. Then there was East, and honestly, I felt terrible for him and the way Tru treated him. Yes, it was an entertaining story, but by the halfway mark, II knew who had done it (not why) and was ready for the reveal.

πŸ”Ž True crime elements
πŸŒͺ️ Twisty ending
πŸ”‚ Repetitive
😬 A lot of characters

I recommend reading One Last Breath if you love a good paranormal thriller set in the Deep South.

I started reading The Rule Book immediately after reading The Cheat Sheet because I *needed* to keep the fun going. I never imagined I would like a sports romance, but here we are! And now that I’ve finished Nora and Derek’s story, I’m going to need Sarah Adams to hurry up and write something else as soon as possible.

Like Bree and Nathan, I enjoyed the protagonists Nora and Derek. The only thing that did bother me is that Derek acted a little too childish at the beginning of the storyβ€”I understand that he had his heart broken, but it was a long time ago again, and he needed to let it go. But fear not, he grew on me, and I ended up loving his character.

I also loved that The Rule Book had the bedroom door cracked open - there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of steam in books, and personally, I think Sarah Adams handled it so tastefully. There was nothing about the one scene that felt like too much.

✌🏼 Dual POV
πŸ’ Marriage of convenience
πŸ‘πŸΌ No third-act break-up
😍 Open door romance (one chapter)

I recommend reading The Cheat Sheet first and then reading The Rule Book. Both of these stories are perfect for fans of The Bromance Book Club.

"Hope is healthy. Even if you prepare yourself for the worst in life, it will never make the fall hurt less."

Another win for Sarah Adams! The Cheat Sheet is my third book from her, and I plan to read everything else she writes. I love how Adams can create authentic, down-to-earth characters in her books. She's a true breath of fresh air to the romance genre. Have you read any of her books? Do you have a favorite?

Speaking of fresh air, Nathan's character stole the show for me. I loved how kind and considerate he was of Bree Cheese. He loved her as his friend first and then fell in love with her as his best friend. He was always willing to put her first - which is a rarity in the world of high-paid professional athletes. The Cheat Sheet was a dual perspective, but I wish there had been more from Nathan.

I recommend reading The Cheat Sheet right now to read the second book - The Rule Book (out on April 2, 2024).

This horror story snuck up on me - in a good way.
Thank you, Atria Books, for the gifted copy of Lost Man's Lane {partner}

"We must stay buried if what I've heard is the truth, and I'm confident it is. Dead men tell no tales, they say, and they are wrong. Dead men tell plenty of tales, but they do not tell lies."

I've started and stopped writing this review so many times because I'm having trouble sharing my thoughts without giving away key plot points of Lost Man's Lane. I had no idea what to expect from this bookβ€”even while reading it; I had no idea where it could go because I was so absurd in the story itself. I didn't spend time thinking about the different directions the author could take me. What's the last book that did that for you?

Lost Man's Lane is part detective story, part coming-of-age story, and part horror. For those of you who have been following my reviews, I don't typically jive with the horror genre. But I loved this book! Also, Scott Carson's writing style? It was like I was reading something written by Stephen King and William Kent Krueger. The attention to detail was spot-on and added to the story's mystery.

I also loved all of the characters. Truly. They all brought a little something to the story and brought the whole book to life. One character in particular grated on my nerves at the very beginning and ended up being my absolute favorite.

😒 Defining moments of the 90s and 2000s

I always love a good Simone St. James Ghost Story πŸ‘»

Genre: Thriller

"If there was one thing I knew, it was the feeling of carrying someone's death on your hands. The knowledge that if you could rewind time, you could do something differently, and that person would still be alive."

I am such a huge fan of Simone St James - her books are typically what I compare all thrillers to. She has such a fact for putting together all of these creepy, tension-filled scenes and not leaving me disappointed with an ending that makes me feel like I just finished watching a Scooby Doo movie. IYKYK

Murder Road has been high on my TBR list for six months, and as soon as it arrived, I started reading. I had to stop myself from reading it too quickly, as I actually wanted to savor it. The story had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and anxiously trying to piece together all of Cold Lake Falls's creepy occurrences. It was everything that I had hoped it would be.

However… yes, there is a however (and it pains me); my only real complaint is that there were just a few too many aspects that didn't quite add up for me. It just felt like something was missing with the ending. I still loved it, but it somehow missed the mark.

I recommend reading Murder Road if you're looking for a 90's nostalgia-filled ghost story.

Do you gravitate towards books with characters overcoming a significant loss?
Thank you, Random House + PRH Audio, for the gifted copy of After Annie {partner}

β€œYou know what bothers me,” Ali said in the car, looking straight ahead through the windshield. β€œThat my father can have another wife, but we can’t ever have another mother.”

I often reach for books with characters trying to overcome a significant loss because they make me pause and reflect on how a loss like that might affect my life. Maybe it’s the idea of mentally and emotionally preparing myself for how I could be impacted or a reminder that I am not alone in my feelings of grief.

I went into After Annie, thinking it would be one of those stories that I would need to take slowly and may need to put down for something light. Because how could a story about a family losing their wife/mother/friend/sister not be too heavy? But, I never once felt heavy with emotion. The author, Anna Quindlen, did an incredible job telling this story without overshadowing the sadness of what happened to Annie Brown.

Don’t get me wrong, it was still sad, but it was more of a look at all the ways we have to grow and change our lives following the death of someone close to us. The different journeys of all the characters felt so realistic that I had to remind myself that After Annie is fictional.

πŸ’” Realistic look at grief

πŸ’¨ Quick read

πŸ“Œ Addiction, death of a parent, death of a spouse, miscarriage

I recommend reading After Annie only if you are in a good mental and emotional state to handle a novel about losing someone. If you have any questions, please DM me to chat!

Another Hitchcock-inspired book to add to your reading list for this year!
Thank you, Atria Books, for the gifted copy of Kill of Me, Kill for You {partner}

Genre: Mystery
Trope: Strangers on a Train

Kill for Me, Kill for You is my first Steve Cavanagh book. I haven’t felt comfortable jumping into his other books, as so many of them are part of a series, and I would need to start with book one. I was also concerned that since KFM, KFY is Hitchcock-inspired, I wouldn’t enjoy the plot as much - not because I don’t enjoy Hitchcock but because I fear a lack of originality.

While the plot is similar to Strangers on a Train, Kill for Me, Kill for You was wholly original. It was brilliantly twisty and had me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed putting all the puzzle pieces together, and I was still surprised by the twist.

The only aspect that bothered me about the book is that it's a slow-build mystery; not much happens for the first 40-ish percent of the story, which might make it a hard sell for those of us who like a mystery that hooks you and then takes off running. I also found some aspects of the story to be unrealistic, but I just had to focus on suspending my belief for the sake of the story.

🐒 Slow build
🎒 Rollercoaster ride
πŸ—£οΈ Alternating POV
😳 Cliffhanger chapters

I recommend Kill for Me, Kill for You if you’re looking for a book that will make you say, β€œjust one more chapter.”

"Memories are always bent retrospectively to fit individual narratives."

While it took me a bit to get into The Glass Hotel, it wasn't the author's fault - I always struggle to adapt to non-linear timelines and lots of characters. I had to back up to reread a few sections, but it didn't make me love the story any less. It made me appreciate Mandel's ability to connect even the most mundane things.

The Glass Hotel is a rich, vivid story brimming with complex characters that become interwoven in one another's lives. As usual, Mandel does an outstanding job showing real-life events and the disastrous tolls they can have on the world and those around us.

πŸ”€ Non-linear timelines
πŸ’° Ponzi scheme
