The Last Mile by Kat Martin

I had high hopes for this book, but it just didn’t hold up for me. The writing felt very flat to me and so did the characters. The writing did a lot of telling without showing, or rather, it did a lot of telling us things, then showing the opposite to be true. For example, we’re supposed to believe that Abigail is potentially a competent treasure hunter who could become Gage’s partner, but what is shown to us made me feel that it was actually very irresponsible to bring her along on these quests. She is constantly in danger and in need of saving by Gage.
As for the romance, I didn’t feel the chemistry between these two and often wondered what it was they saw in each other, other than a whole lot of lust, which begins instantly at the beginning of the book. We don’t really see anything deeper develop.
The adventure part was okay, and it’s what kept me reading the entire book. However, parts of it began to feel racist to me. Mexico is supposedly a dangerous, corrupt place full of poor people. Toward the end of the book, we have some white savior complex going on that isn’t explored with any nuance. These details make the book go from “okay” to “nope” in my mind.

Loved this book. I really enjoyed Lizzan’s character and all she had to suffer through before getting to her happily ever after. Even with all she went through, she still loved and helped people and never lost that part of herself. And I loved the way Aerax loved her fearlessly and without restraint. This book is equal parts romantic, sexy, and adventurous. The fantasy world pulls you in, and I found the lore so fascinating. Not just the lore, but the commentary on how lore is passed down and how it can be twisted away from the truth. I think I loved this book just as much as the first book, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the third.

Every so often, I’m in the mood for a sci-fi horror that takes place in the isolation of space, and this book definitely delivered that for me. The mystery of what happened on the Aurora had me intrigued. I found the main character to be interesting, as well. Following along in her head as she tried to distinguish between reality and hallucination/ghosts added a whole other level of creepy to this book. You don’t just delve into the isolation of space—you’re plunged into the isolation of the mind.
I listened to the audiobook, and the emotion delivered by the narrator took me on a horrific ride of terror. Five stars to the narrator, Lauren Ezzo.
I hope I find more books like this in the future, and I’m crossing my fingers for a movie adaptation.

Solita is a gothic romance that, at its core, is about loss and grief. I’d been in the mood for a good gothic tale, and Solita did not disappoint. It contains haunted nightmares, a demon love interest, an old Hacienda with a haunted history, and that intense sense of isolation I’ve come to crave in my gothic novels. Set in the Philippines, the sublime imagery of nature becomes a character in its own right. Overall, this was just what I was in the mood for, and I look forward to more from Vivien Rainn.
