would i read this again? ummm i’m not sure but did i enjoy reading it? yes DEFINITELY! i think for starters, having an unreliable narrator always makes things interesting— and it definitely did. while the book, the characters, and their problems are all pretentious as fuck… sometimes it’s kinda fun to read that? and the plot twist— i personally liked it! i didn’t find it predictable. also, the broken writing style, i thought that was fitting. but each to their own. i really want to give this book 3.5 stars but 3 will have to do for now. if i find myself thinking about it though i’ll come and change it to 4.

stuck between 3 stars and 4 stars tbh. the characters were so unlikeable at times and i found myself rolling my eyes a little too much. but they were also very real. and perhaps that is just the charm of this. sally rooney’s writing is just very beautiful and the way she rights about people and their relationships and the world is enticing. but at the same time, this book was frustrating at certain parts. perhaps i will have to come back to this.

[read this over the summer and forgot to log, therefore the review is just random thoughts from my notes app]

- really weird but in a good and interesting way
- unlikeable, flawed, character til the end… wasn’t rooting for at all and honestly didn’t want her life to get any better but rather worse considering how terrible of a person she was
- but that being said it was still really interesting to read how ridiculous and messed up she was
- all the drug names made my head hurt
- pop culture references were nice
- ending felt a bit dragged

- so weird??? wtf???
- but i kinda enjoyed it in a psycho character study way
- love an unreliable narrator: she was so weird, violent and cruel but what made it more interesting was that she knew that
- she knew her power and what she was capable of, and she used that in every situation she was in
- got really gruesome and american psycho-esque by the end which really isn’t my thing
- but it fucked me up— meaning it was successful
- woven into this unhinged and gross stort is an interesting commentary on the male gaze, gender roles and power dynamics and how the protagonist twists all of that to her on benefit
- she is the villain of her own story with her own villain origin story (trauma, sexual abuse, just fucked up surroundings)
- she has no moral compass which makes this even more thrilling (minus these weird moments of reflection where she’s like wow i’m messed up, and then continues to be shit)
- gritty and gross and totally out of my comfort zone

not sure how i feel about this… some stories were really heartfelt and raw, while others were a snoozefest

definitely a very basic intro text on feminism, masculinities, and related topics that makes very good points. i think everybody, especially every man should read this. and then read more & more because this barely scratches the surface.
