Becky Chambers vibes, I really enjoyed it.

I love sci-fi stories in which something (a skill or technology) humankind uses everyday has to be explained to a race that has no idea what it is. It feels like a refresher-course in being grateful for what you have. And recently I have been very interested in time, and timelessness, and this book discusses it in a very interesting way.

Straight up, this book would've been better if it was longer. I wanted more of these characters, I wanted more of the world, I wanted more of the story. Will definitely be reading the next one

I am a really big fan of classic mystery novels with eccentric main characters, so I thought this book would be a slam dunk. Sadly, it really wasn't for me. The main character always struck me as irritating, he was constantly talking and walking over people, and had very little personality aside from being Sherlock-esque and loud. The story was very hard to follow, as was the dialogue at many points. I did also guess the murderer the moment the character was introduced, and I was right, even though their was very little evidence that could have led the readers themselves to the answer.

It took me a while, but I finished the entire Lord of the Rings series!
This final book was really good! Each character goes up against a mountain of hardship, all created to hurt them especially, and must fight to not only save themselves but everyone they care about. And as darkness spreads, our heroes need to keep faith in themselves, and have hope for a brighter future.
Also I love that we end on a scene with Sam, as he has almost become the main protagonist for the story.

My expectations for this might have been a bit too high going in, and it probably effected how I felt about the story. It's good and well done, I'm just not super interested and found it hard to follow at first.

Really enjoyed it. The mystery was really well made, and I did not guess the ending at all! The audio-book narration was phenomenal and probably a part of why I enjoyed this book so much.

Everything I disliked about Fellowship was improved in this book, and everything I liked about it was amplified. There's adventure and friendship and crazily impressive world-building, and I am incredibly excited to read the next installment!

I wasn't about to give this a four, up until the final poem. It was for his wife, who had passed away. And it was beautiful.

...
Are You hiding, God?
Are You hiding in the rain?
Are you hiding?

I am here

I am here in every song you sing
In the wings of a rising lark
Through the darkness to the morning light.
I am present in everything

...

I am here as every flake of snow
Washes white on the countryside.
As each green blade stretches for the sun.
I am here watching over them.

I know it's about a relationship to God, but in my interpretation it is also about loss. Hoping and praying that the people you have loved and lost are still in the world somehow. Not as themselves necessarily, but as a presence that remains to make sure that you're okay. That the grass grows, and the rains fall, and the stars shine.
