I read this for class and I realize the time it was written is a huge reason for the sexism and racism but I could not see past it. I balked at lines in the text all the time. How people don't see Peter Pan as a demon disguised as a mischievous fairy boy is beyond me.

Anyway, onto better, modern books.

I had the utmost pleasure of reading this a while back and adored every word. June's writing is breathtaking, her characters pull at your heart, and her mystery is both alluring and constantly leaves you guessing!
I am so excited that others will be able to read this beautiful book as well and that someone as deserving as June gets to have her words be out in the world.
Everyone, you are doing yourself a favour by adding this book to your TBR!

A strange story. I had to read for class as well and though I'm glad to put a classic on my "read" shelf, I'm unsure how much I enjoyed it. It wasn't a bad story, though parts I skimmed, and I liked seeing the underlying symbolisms in it (some though, are very racists like the Winged Monkeys and the Winkies).

Wow. This book sucked me in from the first page and called out to me to keep reading throughout the weekend. I'm usually a very slow reader, but when books captivate me like this one did, I fly through it, not getting enough of the voice, the world, the characters, the story.

This was all true and then some for MY DARK VANESSA.

Going back and forth between the year 2000 and 2017, seeing Vanessa go through what she did with her predator teacher to her grappling with the realities of what it did to her as an adult was both tragic, disturbing, and fascinating in a horrifying way. Kate Elizabeth Russell's writing is a package of dynamite as Stephen King says. I couldn't get enough of as she told Vanessa's story that holds so much complexity about consent, abuse, PTSD, and the psychology behind why victims may not or cannot always come forward.

I loved everything about this book even though it is a very dark read and doesn't shy away from the realities of sexual abuse. Please be advised of this when going in. If you're able to read it when it release in January 2020, be prepared for a book that you won't be able to stop talking or thinking about. I can completely see why Harper Collins called this book an explosive, timely debut.

Thank you to HarperCollins for the advanced review copy I received at Book Con. All opinions are my own.

Update: So this beauty of a book is now OUT!! *heart eyes* I'm so glad others will be able to read this fantastic book with amazing world-building, well fleshed out characters who I adore, an amazing magic system, and plot twists around every corner.

If you haven't already added this book to your TBR or picked up a copy from the store or library, DO IT!!! I gurantee you'll be drooling over not only the cover, but everything on the pages as well.
