I was having such a good time until the random violently transphobic short story…. I’m so disappointed & did not expect that from Junji Ito :/
idk that I’ll be picking him up again tbh; not to be dramatic, but I could feel my heart breaking into little pieces while reading that story. Junji Ito was like my favourite manga author/artist bro whyyyyy (when will authors just be normal so I don’t have to continually go through the pain of falling in love with an authors work just for them to turn out to be shitty)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 This was just like Challengers except Chess and without the polyamorous throuple tension so it actually wasn’t like Challengers at all…..
Positives:
- I think Ali choosing to write a YA novel forced her to put more effort into the actual storytelling/plot & it reaaaallllyyy paid off in my opinion. This truly felt like Ali’s best writing (so far that I’ve read, I still have 3 books to go) & I’m quite surprised because I typically really cringe at YA romance.
- the most locked into an Ali Hazelwood book that I’ve been so far, I was biting my nails & kicking my feel and giggling.
- Nolan is my favourite love interest of Ali’s so far
- I genuinely really loved Mallory as a character and all of the stuff she was going through felt really real & I loved that she felt like a complex character
- I don’t know shit about chess but I was on the edge of my seat over these games
Negatives:
- I honestly don’t really understand why this was categorized as YA??? They were adults and Ali was still writing some NSFW content?? To be fair, it was quite toned down from her other novels in that regard, but it still felt a little odd
- still some pretty corny references/writing at times
- me and a third act breakup will always be enemies…..

Now what in the world….. most insane published Star Wars fanfic maybe ever??
Some of the many what the fuck moments:
- the audiobook narrator giving Michael a thick Fabio-core accent
- Han Solo deciding that instead of coping with the girl he likes choosing to be with someone else he’ll just….. hold her at gun point, stun her, kidnap her, & then hold her hostage on a planet he won gambling in an attempt to “win her heart back.” Because obviously… why wouldn’t this work?
- Luke on a random ass side quest most of the book and then linking up with Michael and some Dathomir witches to stop Han Solo
- Han Solo and Leia then both being held hostage on this planet and then Han decides to trade the planet for Leia’s…. Hand in marriage??? As if that would have literally any control over if she wanted to marry him or not????
- really random fighting that makes no sense
- Han Solo then straps himself to some bombs and is gonna suicide bomb some guys for whatever reason & then Leia decides she loves him again and kisses him passionately while he’s hooked up to a bunch of bombs. Then they get married even though they had like 2 conversations in this entire book & he borderline assaulted and kidnapped her
Anyways, thanks Dave for the righteous piece of literature

This is absolutely the book to give to that person in your life who maybe isn’t aware of/ignorant about/flat out denies this ongoing issue. It is a VERY well researched nonfiction that recounts a multitude of cases as well as mistreatment by government officials/workers & more & I really hope this gets turned into a mainstream documentary.
MMIW are constantly blatantly ignored or swept under the rug & it’s so unbelievably horrifying. In my own city in Alberta it’s been widely believed that there is one, or even multiple serial killer(s) operating since the 80’s and primarily targeting Indigenous women/girls. This has been brought to police and RCMP countless times to which not much has been done about it. This book actually touches on that as well as a multitude of other Highway of Tears killings/unsolved disappearances & so many people are not aware of how terrifyingly large of a phenomenon this is.
This book is incredibly important, & I hope it helps bring more attention to this.

I’m really not fucking with this….. & I’m so disappointed……
It’s possible I’m just struggling with the e-version though…? I will dabble again when this is out & maybe try the audiobook

I-… !!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 New Emily Henry saved my April honestly; this has breathed new life into me.
Positives:
- I truly think this was some of Emily’s BEST writing at times
- I adored the interwoven timelines in the interviews
- I also loved what I felt was a pining & angsty romance. I’m seeing a lot of people saying they felt it was insta lovey & I don’t reaaaaalllyyyyy see it?? (In some ways maybe, but I’ll get to that)
- the most locked in I’ve been to an Emily Henry book so far perhaps?
- like yes, it was kinda predictable I guess, but arguably in a deeply rewarding way in my opinion
- I’m so serious when I say this has the best smut I’ve ever read & I’m a notorious demisexual who constantly cringes at smut. (To clarify, this doesn’t actually have very much smut arguably, but what it does include goes SOOOO HARD)
- I see a lot of people shitting on the romance in here, but I actually thought the anticipation & tension between them was written very very well
Negatives:
- I do think there was just something slightly missing…? Like I don’t know how to put into words exactly what I mean by this, but I almost wish it went a little further in some ways?? I felt like there almost wasn’t enough of the story with Margaret, & then even though there was a lot of pining & I adore the romance in here, by the time they said their “I love you’s” it did almost read kind of anticlimactic & I can understand why people call it insta-lovey?? I personally wouldn’t go that far, but I can understand that argument. Similarly, the reveal I thought was great but it all almost felt a tad abrupt and left me feeling slightly lukewarm?
- I do think it’s valid to say this feels like a pretty carbon copy TJR rip off…? (& I’m no TJR fan, she’s a fucking weirdo so in no means am I trying to defend her at all, but is strangely similar? It feels slightly disappointing tbh ??) Like this I would say does stand on it’s own legs, but anyone even passingly familiar with TJR I think will cock their head at it & question why it’s so similar, specifically to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
Regardless, I stand by this has some of Emily’s best writing and I think with some adjustments this could have been astronomical. I still love it and had so much fun though :)

50 shades of The Love Hypothesis
Positives:
- the smut was actually good & fun!!!
- I was kicking my feet and giggling quite frequently
- Elsie my Ace-coded beloved….. Get behind me I’m so serious….. This could be me shouting into the void, but as an adult diagnosed autistic who spent most of my life undiagnosed I felt like I could reaaaallly see that in Elsie as well in terms of masking and people pleasing
- the romance dynamic in this was really really fun and maybe I love Jack idk (Adam is still my favourite though, I’m loyal)
- Ali Hazelwood being an Alice x Bella shipper she’s so meeeeee (Where is the Alice x Bella omegaverse book Ali give us something sapphic I actually beg of you)
- this is so completely unrelated but I think Ali could write a killer dnd romance
Negatives:
- definitely still lots of cringe-y moments/dialogue but I found I could overlook it for the most part
- also irritatingly similar to The Love Hypothesis in pretty much every way, but in its defence, I do think this book stands on its own way better then Love on the Brain did
