Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

I had been told to read this book, so it was a pleasant surprise when the next day my English teacher announced that we would be reading it.
I thought that compared to the other science fiction books that have been recently published, Fahrenheit 451 was actually well thought out and actually predicted a feasible outcome for the future. A world where books are illegal and are burned by firemen is a lot more reasonable than The Hunger Games, Matched, or The Selection. I felt that the writing style for this book was slightly confusing, though brilliantly told through the thoughts of Guy Montag. You could see him slowly being driven insane by hauntings of countless books and houses he's burned and the parlor "family."
In short, I'd say that everyone should read this book at least once in their lives.

Overall, I thought the ideas in this book were mostly original. A heroine stuck in a totalitarian town surrounded by a dangerous forest that no one has made it through. I thought highly of the main female protagonist, Vega Jane, at first though towards the end of the book I liked her less and less. She started to descend into the stereotype of most heroines, the type that has a guy best friend, thinks she isn't beautiful, takes care of a little sibling, has no parents, then gets the guy in the end. She also got the dog of her dreams that also happened to look just like her childhood dog, Harry. As well as strong will and adventurous spirit, every heroine needs tools for success. Vega gained two tools/weapons which were original enough: Destin, a chain that could make her stronger and fly, and the Adder Stone, a small white stone that could heal any wounds by just waving it over something and thinking good thoughts. Seems like this heroine is getting high on too much power. First she sustains several near-fatal wounds, but doesn't have to suffer at all. She just swings a magic white rock around and suddenly everything is shiny and chock full of good feelings for all. In the end, when Vega is flying off with her new boyfriend (aka her best friend), Delph, and her amazing dog Harry 2, are shot at. Delph and Superego (Harry 2) are wounded, and are near death. Vega does her special little wave dance with the Adder Stone and poof! Delph and Harry 2 are alive and well, just covered in their blood. To be quite frank, the plot and storyline are fine, the characters just didn't pique my interest and in my opinion, I found too many holes in the elements of the story.

I read this book last summer with my mom for our little "Mother-Daughter Book Club" and I thought it was pretty dang great! Very original. I liked its seemingly childlike simplicity, though it was seriously complicated underneath. Great plot, almost no holes. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a short, yet powerful and amazing book.

I'm torn between 3.5 and 4 stars on this book. It was a well written, easy to read book, but there was just something that still bothered me about it. Maybe it's the fact that the protagonist, Jo, is probably the most naïve book character I've ever seen. Yes, this book may be set in the 1890s, but come on! There's also the fact that the antagonist isn't the most threatening villain I've ever seen. However, the mystery and murder aspect is redeeming enough to make it a worthwhile read. The romance seems a little forced at times, but overall, I'd say that this book is worth reading.
