jenny han you're in my hit list for always making your 3rd acts so freakin' sad
i read this book when i was much younger and i remembered not liking it cause i taught the characters were too childish and belly was lack of a better word a pick me
but now wanting to reread it due to the upcoming tv show - i appreciated it much more and i'm glad the teenagers here actually act like teenagers
cons
- the whole cam and belly romance like
- wanted more conrad and belly moments
- steven
- taylor
pros
- the family elements
- freakin' conrad
- freakin' conrad and belly
- immaculate summer vibes
- susannah, that's my bestie right there
- easy to read
this is something i don't view as a con exactly but belly did have some internalised mysogyny but i hope she is able to overcome it in the upcoming books
overally really enjoyed it on the second read and now onto the next one which i never read lol

Update: bumped it up to 5 stars cuz i already miss this world *sigh*
i'm a bit conflicted on whether it's a 4.5 or 5 but it honestly depends on the next book
cons
- there was sometimes info dumping on the magic system and history which got tiring to keep up with
- sometimes too many characters to keep track of
- nick and bree's romance lol not a fan personally
pros (plenty there)
- the actual person i ship bree with
- every moment bree has with that person
- exploration of grief
- the emotional moments
- great and loveable characters
- that it's set in college and not high school
- the magic system and history was cool despite the info dumping
i hate to be that person but yes I loved it mainly for the ship i have and if they become canon consider this series a new all time favourite

I'm sorry but I was literally screaming with excitement in the last 1/6th ahhhh
cons (lets get the few things out of the way)
- I wanted to see the child parent relationships to be explored more here (a personal preference)
- Izumi's character arc wasn't handled as well as I wanted it to be
- The third act conflict is something I'm tired of seeing in famous non famous person love stories
- A few things didn't logically make sense
pros (plenty off them lets go)
- izumi's dad is the cutest shut up
- akio, i need a akio oh my gosh
- akio and izumi were so freakin' cute, i would shriek at all of their cute moments
- that freakin' plot twist like whaaattt - not even the thrillers i've read recently were able to blow my mind like this book
- that ending with akio and izumi *sobs*
- such a fun and easy read that made me smile a lot
overall this was almost perfect and is the kind of contemporary romances i love - also netflix you love teen romcoms pls turn this book into a movie
