read for school junior year, completely broke my heart and was in shambles at the end. this book deals with so much and each page made me wanna cry. i didn’t see the twist coming at all and it highlights such an important message of how black girls go missing and nobody cares to look until it’s usually too late. please read as my review won’t do it any justice but it’s an amazing book.

now, this is where i got pissed off. not only do i find the confrontation stupid but in absolutely what world would someone go sit down with the homophobe who abused his friend?? it makes no sense. and while i appreciate the conversation that was had as it uses talking points that come up when talking about queerness and how it calls out the stupidity and obvious homophobia behind those claims i hated how trauma was brought up and laughed at. sure, that doesn’t give that ugly mf an excuse to put his hands on somebody for likin boys but to laugh dead in the face of someone who just admitted they were raped is so fucked up, mind u that’s supposed to be her “friend” like cmon now, whole situation blew me. and that wasn’t even it. for WHATEVER reason we see Mamis downfall in this volume (imo). sure, her story makes sense into why queerness would be an escape from what she’s experienced on the account of her gender but we just saw someone get jumped and someone run away and break down in tears at the thought of being looked at in disgust for her sexual preference from the one she loves like girl i’m
not shedding a tear for u bcs u arent a lesbian. like ur my sister and i love u but no i’m sorry i don’t feel bad for u for THAT reason, i can ofc empathize with her struggles but to do all that bcs u don’t like girls is too damn much. The way Taichi feels is articulated beautifully though as he angrily denounced the thought of being homosexual in public but thinks about his attraction to Touma in private, the way those looks he snuck throughout the series adds up to this moment is brilliant writing!! and i was crying all the way through, TAICHI U ARE LOVED

Claudia Jones is truly such an inspiring person in how her actions directly reflected her politics and she did so seemingly flawlessly, one of the first to recognize some of the major talking points regarding black women, communism, feminism, imperialism, white feminism, etc, but the last brought up in a conversation, sadly, proving her right. for anyone interested in feminism, internationalism, anti-imperialism, african/caribbean diaspora, activism and organizing, communism, or marxist-leninism please read this, it’s something so special and inspiring

very good! read for class and i’m happy i chose this books out of all the other options, i think it highlights a lot of experiences of girls in most facets of life, it’s an important book that i’m glad was made to acknowledge people like Xiomara in real life. though it’s a little predictable and follows typical coming of age tropes i think it’s a necessity in todays world.

read this for english as well, i enjoy story’s told one poem fo because they’re so accessible and u can get through them in a day if u read it consistently, but i think this book is an essential must read in understanding some of the black experience. through means of systemic racism black people have been put in the economic positions as described in the book and many young black boys are put in the position the main character is in due to that, i think it’s important this is acknowledged as it offers humanity to the violence that comes out of it instead of just seeing it as another number on a blown up statistic of violence. i do, however, think it’s important to highlight this is not the ONLY black experience but it is but one facet of it. super good read and very reflective of the culture that’s been built, ending wasnt my favorite however but i do recommend.
