I liked the mix of a black comedy plot line with a heartwarming found family plot line.

I like Thompson’s writing style, but I didn’t like this book as much as the Rosewater books. The solution to the murder mystery came out of nowhere; it wasn’t foreshadowed at all. Since the book switched back and forth from different characters’ POVs, I thought at least one character was the murderer, but no it’s a character we’ve never met before in the book. I didn’t like that as a structure.

The world building was great! I really like this fantasy world. The conflicts between the characters, and the internal ones of the main characters were memorable.

I liked how the two storylines of children grieving loss paralleled each other, sometimes  repeating the same sentence like poems repeat words. And I learned about a famous shipwreck that wasn’t the Titanic!

This was very dense and hard for me to finish. It was more like a history textbook than a memoir.  I ended up skimming to the end before it was due back at the library.

It was mysterious and sad, like Black Mirror or The Twilight Zone.
