“And there I am, blushing and confused, made beautiful by Cinna’s hands, desirable by Peeta’s confession, tragic by circumstance, and by all accounts, unforgettable.”

“Give my mother my best when you make it back will you?”

The cave scenes slowed down the flow for a few chapters but other than that this book is straight up perfection. Brutal, dark, and chilling even so many years after my first read.

The utilization of romance as a shield was chefs kiss amazing.

“Nothing is guaranteed, nothing is permanent, and all I know is that I have to kiss him now, here, while I still have the chance.”

I’m sort of obsessed with this book.

What I didn’t like: flat world building, lack of real plot happenings and too much going on at the same time (weird I know), I wish Wyatt had a little more substance as a character.

What I loved: Jin, the wry/dark humor, literally all of the characters, the pining, the damn twist that shocked me, the author note, how the story starts immediately with action and the reader learns more as the story unfolds.

“I come where there is rot, and I dig it out so that the world can begin again.”

“Her mother told her there were two kinds of people with the Sight: people who were interested in magic, and people magic was interested in.”

“She just could clearly hear her mother’s voice: Don’t climb on the holy well, Merida.”

An interesting read into personal stagnation, and how different destruction can look to each person.

Harris has a special place in my heart.

This made my heart hurt. I’ve long loved Brave and Merida and this felt like an incredibly natural progression of her story with Stiefvater’s glowing prose.

Solid 3.5.

“Yes, for the love of god, woman, you are all I think about.”

“… but he knew his heart was spoken for, in that timeline and even his own.”

“He looked like a relic from the past in the hottest way possible.”

Choppy, repetitive, and could have used a big edit. The exposition was so short I feel like I barely knew Hannah before her love interest was introduced. Graham was a bit flat and most of the other characters were incredibly one dimensional (most were pointless to the story really)

I loved the fat representation and the awesome discussions around consent. The banter was great even if a bit insta-lovey.

I wish the story went more into the magic of it all.

“Over two hundred years ago, her personhood had been stripped from the record and she’d become a haunt, a ghost, a warning.”

“I’m pretty sure the monster in the woods is scared of me.”

“You tried to continue a legacy you didn’t even know about. Who better to be the last one? The final one.”

Eerie and chilling.

Some of the stories bled together at times, I think it would have been remedied if the order of the stories were rearranged.

“Darling, darling, I live in you; and you would die for me, I love you so.”

“You must come with me; loving me, to death; or else hate me and still come with me, and hating me through death and after.”

I loved so much about this: a lesbian vampire, the gothic-ness, and qualities/abilities of vampires I’ve never heard of before.

Supremely entertaining.

I do have a lot of questions remaining and would have liked another hundred pages.

“Take care. It would be very dull to have to sit here for an entire day just because you went and got yourself killed.”
“My last thoughts would be of your boredom.”

“If I kill him, I won’t have to feel like this anymore.”

“The odd thing about ambition is this: You can acquire it like a fever, but it is not so easy to shed.”

This book HOOKED me. I haven’t read many (if any) books about fairies and found it enjoyable. The plot is super character focused which slowed it down a bit but the court/political intrigue was awesome.

I made a few good guesses early on but was still pleasantly surprised at how things developed.

That ending tho….

“I am Hallandrette’s favorite son and I will devour your bones as surely as she does when her unloved children are cast into the ocean.”

“No one would expect that boyish half smile, that nervous wringing of the wrist, to conceal a monster.”

Another 50-100 pages would have really rounded this book out and answered some of the lingering questions. I wish it included more of the plague aspect.

I love so much about this: the visceral scenery, complex/messed up characters, plague, the messed up romance, and haunting concepts.

“The ocean is not just one thing… It is knowable and unknown. As Brody gazes out into forever, I think about how the seas is not just one thing and neither am I.”

Loved every minute. The art and variety of stories kept every entry fresh, heartfelt, and entertaining.

“How long did you wait?”
“I haven’t stopped.”

“For once in my life, I was here and nowhere else.”

What I love: a different take on werewolves, atmospheric, riddled with nostalgia for me, Sam, and the prose.

Weird and insta-lovey but highly enjoyable nonetheless.
