I felt that the first half of the story was so rushed. It was hardly immersive and the romance and the plot felt so passive. For example (spoiler‼️) when Xingyin and Liwei fall in love it’s like within 2 days. Like Xingyin had no feeling for him until the same day he confessed his love or whatever. I just think there could have been better buildup. Also the fight scenes sucked like why did she ALWAYS win hello?? The book definitely did get better and I might give the sequel a shot.

ALSO: to the girl at the barnes and noble checkout who told me this was the best book she ever read: PLEASE read some better books and acquire better taste (no offense) or maybe don’t work in a bookstore? I say this with love I’m sorry girl but you deserve to read some good literature.

oh my goddddd this could have been soooo fire of a novel, of a romance, of a tragedy, if ONLY the plot holes were addressed and the loose ends tied. its def not a one sitting read and overly long when it doesn't need to be, but it's solid enough ig. good for the gen population of non readers (i'm a snob i'm sorry).
