i really enjoyed this book. maeve and zevander were both characters i enjoyed - although not yet my favorites. i’m hoping that the next book in the series develops them a bit.

i’m excited to see how the author approaches the next book because the first book was really good. it is well-written and intriguing. the first bit of the book was gripping and the world building was done well. i liked that things were explained yet there’s still so many unknowns - we are in the dark as much as Maeve and it’s fabulous.

the ending caught me off guard, but not necessarily in a good way? i want to know how and why the book was ended like that because my brain cannot grasp that aspect of the story. it felt like the author needed to find some way to reintroduce her???

anywho, can’t wait for book 2!

Sorrow and Starlight

Susanne Valenti, Caroline Peckham

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

DNFing for the moment because jesus christ i can’t do this anymore. i’ll be finishing the story, more out of morbid curiousity than anything. why the fuck did they make this series so long? please cut some fucking filler oh my god

god i have so many thoughts on this book.

nell and bones, as characters, were both fine? i found the assault to be a bit much at times, too - i love a good dark romance book but this book was missing one crucial aspect for a few of the important scenes - consent. it is very difficult for me to wrap my mind around a relationship/romance that flourishes after one character is utterly violated by another.  although i liked the characters backgrounds/histories and felt like they played into the storyline well, and they did a decent job at supporting the characters present day actions, including ones that pissed me off to no end.

what i did find was gravely missing in this book was solid pacing. i felt like at times we were just skipping through time. parts that were ultimately important to the romance & military aspect of the book were glazed over, while seemingly pointless things were focused on for way too long. it took me out of the story a few times, and it made me feel like the high plot points the author was trying to focus on we’re shorter and less complex than they should have been.

lastly, i hate that i’ve become this reader, but this story was so predictable, and the end was really poorly done in my opinion. the big plot twist of this book was one i saw coming literally from the first time
jenkins
was mentioned. not only that but
what the fuck was that ending? i literally hated that bradshaw randomly showed up and then boom bam we’re done. i thought the end could’ve been done better, bringing the reader through it a little better. maybe give us a few chapters in preparation? idk it felt so rushed and gave me a reading ick real bad

i liked the concept of this book a lot. the dark forces were super intriguing and i loved that nell and bradshaw were both terrifying. but unfortunately, there was a lot more in this book that i was disappointed in.

Okay this was adorable.

A sweet enemy to lovers (rivals to lovers maybe?) trope done in such a wonderful way. I loved the way Henry leaned into the typical small town romance tropes, while simultaneously weaving the book through it. I thought she did such a wonderful job with such lovable characters. I genuinely just enjoyed this book.

Did this book need to be 600 fucking pages? Absolutely not.

Overall it was alright. I liked Scarlett and Asher both, but wasn't crazy about their relationship? TBH the whole
"don't tell Vincent or the world will explode"
thing was so fucking annoying to read. Especially because I felt like Scarlett was so desperate to be mature and good the whole book, but chose to actively be decieving? Idk I just didn't like it.

I did the "traumas" of both of the characters, although
Asher's self-help trope also sort've annoyed me. "OMG I suddenly figured out what's wrong with me after all these years and it's like so simple because I never realized I had a problem until a page ago???
" Idk. It was addicting, and I have never read a soccer/football sports romance, not sure if I would read another tho, based on this one.

Listened to this book because Irish Accent...duh. The story itself was not my favorite because that kind of love, we both are madly in love despite not seeing each other for 8 years, is just not believeable for me. BUT, I thought the author did a good job tying in the trauma each of them experienced, as well as how that trauma shaped their adult lives and their relationship.

The relationship itself was not a favorite of mine, but individually I liked both characters, liked the setting, and the ending. I felt like the middle could've been better, but wasn't bad! Would absolutely recommend the audiobook, though. The Irish accent is an absolute yes.

How many times in a single book can an author write "[their] silhouette blurred"...??? I don't know, but TL Swan sure wants to push that limit.

These characters were actually the fucking worst. Gracie is an absolute fucking moron. Woman, go to therapy, for fucks sake. I hate books that make charatcers, specifically the FMC seem absolutely pathetic. And this book did just that. If you want an FMC who lets the MMC just absolutely steamroll her any opportunity available, this is the book for you!

And don't get me started on Gabriel. The spoiled man-child who legitimately threw temper tantrums what felt like every other fucking chapter.

If you're looking for a couple who has no romantic or sexual chemistry, yet manages to fuck constantly (like for what??? why??? why are you fucking the person who treats you like actual human garbage and convincing yourself you're in love??? huh??? what about that toxic ass behavior makes you believe this person loves you??!!!), and a book that nicely represents the most toxic form of love...read this gem! Or if you like yourself, maybe skip it.

Tucker is too adorable. Listened to the audiobook for the soul purpose of listening to the country twang...worth it

One giant, satisfying epilogue for a series I really enjoyed

I listened to the audiobook and YUP in terms of dark romance this was...yup.

Am I into masks?

The MMC managed to have just enough Dark Romance in him to have the novel what it was, but he was also kind and sweet? It just worked for me
