Skin of the Night

look, when i started this book i was genuinely excited. it seemed like i had finally found THAT book with the main character who was actually realistic, and not weirdly cheesy, and the main male love interest who was ACTUALLY a feminist without falsely claiming so, and then a cool romance. however, around 50% in, the guy clearly showed traits of lacking basic human decency in consent. it was incredibly creepy, unattractive, and i would have gotten a restraining order. no, it wasn’t the cute “you’re mine” moments, it was fully “you’re embarrassing me and giving me false hope because your showing interesting  in other men even though we’re not dating and you’ve consistently said no and to leave me alone, but i don’t care because i don’t like it”. i cannot stress enough, if somebody tells you that they do not want to have a relationship with you, then take the bloody hint!! it got the point where she was forced to apologise for “pulling him around” even when she was literally just living, and i couldn’t take anymore.

it wasn’t the right time to be reading this book, and that’s not the actual book’s fault in any way. i have been stuck in a cycle of reading slumps for a while, and this happened to be the book i was reading while i got into one. i really liked the writing style, character diversity and depth, and the plot was interesting, albeit very slow-paced. i’ll admit, that made it a little hard to continue. eventually, i just couldn’t finish it and it felt like i was forcing myself to read it. maybe i’ll finish it another time if i decide to try again, but i doubt that’ll be any time soon. i still really recommend, but it wasn’t meant to be :)

i wasn’t feeling connected to the characters nor the writing as much as i had the previous 2 books in the trilogy. the plot didn’t feel as structured, maybe a little weak, and it started to feel like a chore to read. i was going to push through just so i could say “oh, yeah i’ve read that” but, honestly, i really don’t want to.. this is entirely subjective, and overall, this isn’t a BAD book - it just wasn’t something i particularly liked :)
