The pandemic gave many of us a taste of too much unstructured time. Deaths in Lockdown by Ratna Chandu acknowledges a thriller based on human cruelty.
This is the story of Gautam and Amrutha. Amrutha is a nurse who faces many incidents and deaths in her work, but it's different because it is of someone she knows. During the pandemic situation, she serves corona patients. And then she gets to know the conspiracy is going on at the hospital. Did she be able to fight against this? And what price she had to pay?
The story moves along at a nice pace, the intrigue and intensity slowly escalate until it culminates in a brilliant conclusion. Ratna can keep the readers in suspense till the last pages.
Overall, this is a quite nice read with easy language.

Trigger Warning: Abusive slangs, Rape

“The beautiful sky: healing starts within” by Harshwardhan, an enthralling romance with strong characters, a good plot, and enticing prose (Shayari).
This is a story of Vian and Amyra who fall in love, but their parents don’t accept their relationship and they get separated. But then there is a twist in the story when one week before marriage Amyra got gang-raped, Vian comes forward to support and help her in healing.
This is one of those rare books that keep readers turning the pages. The descriptive nature of the Hindi Shayari is mixed with the author’s ability to weave beautiful dialogues to create an enjoyable reading experience. The portraits of the lead and auxiliary characters are perfectly painted and readers understand who they are, what they are passionate about, and most importantly what they feel in the very depths of their being. There are underlying themes of love, sacrifice, sexual abuse, and healing that are seamlessly incorporated into the story.
Overall, this is book gives me a good reading experience and holds a moral value in between the lines.

“Rape” is a taboo word to discuss. However, no one can deny that the victim of this distressing and horrendous crime always leaves with a feeling of self-blame, rage, and self-loathing and suffer from PTS disorder.
But have you wondered about the rapist? Why do men rape? This is a complicated question. “Jasbir Singh” attempts to answer this question through his book “Why does man rape?”
I must say this is a well-researched book. He not only focuses on the modern era but also digs deep into history to find out the reasons for this disgraceful act. He stated many reasons like illiteracy, unfair practices, and patriarchy, etc. he has interviewed over 100 convicted for crimes with diverse backgrounds, social statuses, different personalities, and mentalities. What surprised me as to how unconcerned they sounded when talking about such a criminal offense. With many research and case studies, the author has explained the societal, biological, and mental reasons for this crime.
I appreciate how much effort Jasbir put into collecting all the data and real case studies. The author writes with empathy and, a general concern about this issue. Overall, this is a well-researched book with plenty of resources for help and is a must-read for everyone.

“Paradox” by “Arya Narrayan” brings a sci-fi and space opera treat to the fantasy readers which resonates with the current pandemic situation with the tinge of humor.
This is a story of an outbreak of a contagious virus A, which speeds up the age acceleration and no one has a cure to it, not even to WHO. The protagonist, Veronica administrative of NASA approached by a grey alien with a claim of a cure for this virus. Is it a truth or just an alien invasion? To find out grab your copy.
The author uses a clever ploy to make it an entertaining read. the story is simple yet nearly perfect in its execution. The plot and characters are the mirrors of our struggle in the present Covid situation. I like the lucid writing style of the author, I easily carried away within the story as I turned the pages. Overall this is a fresh and satisfying sci-fi read.

“The Stolen Husband” by “Lorette Lost” is a kind of thriller which gripped me from the first page and in 3 hours I completed it.
This is a story of a divorced, heartbroken woman Evie, who just recovered from a Coma. She is trying to move on. On her healing journey, she meets with a loving and caring guy Lukas and, love blossoms between them. Everything is going great till the day she received a note. What is written on the note? The book is superbly written with evocative settings. It holds everything, there is intrigue, deception, love, happiness, and thrill. A mystery read keeps you on the edge and unable to stop reading. The character craft is amazing, I love the strong portrayal of Evie.
Overall, this is an entertaining read and recommended to thriller lovers.

India has a hierarchical society, and societal hierarchy is evident of caste groups, amongst individuals. “Once upon a time in Bharatha Desham” by “Mahesh N Kotekere” is a collection of short stories which reflect our flawed society and a dedicated person to bring the change.
This is a story of a King who challenged the stereotypes of society, believes in equality, and wants to make a safe and happy place for his people. but many conspirators are ready to hinder his path. You will find a glimpse of Indian epic stories with deep meanings. Will the King be succeeded to break the stereotypes?
I found each story well developed based on an array of themes, nepotism, casteism, slavery, greed for power, politics, and pride. The main charm of this book is “The King with no name and identity” yet an Influential character. I think Mahesh is the type of author who has a rare skill in creating characters who are real and easily relatable to readers, and in also educating the reader about the history, and relationships among the different people.
Overall, it is an engrossing read with deep meaning. I would recommend this book to everyone.

“A mother’s Goodbye” by “Kasturi Patra” reflects emotions, which will stay with you long after completing the book.
How many times do we read stories or see pictures which glorify the pain of a mother as unconditional love? She indeed loves her child unconditionally but what about her dreams and ambitions. Our patriarchal society just sees a mother as a sacrificer and demands no errors in parenting.
This is a story of three children, 17 years Avik, 16 years Mou, and 8 years Ishaan. One day when Mou back from the home she finds a note that her mother has left. This is a journey of all three to live their life, to chase their dreams, to find their identity, and to find their mother.
The lucid writing style makes this read flowy. What I like about the writing is that Kasturi creates a story which did not allow you to be judgmental, it simply allows you to understand the different perspectives of persons. This book not just holds a women’s story, also bashing the gender-equality, search for own identity and respecting other’s choice. I love the way the author crafts an internal conflict of characters and how they deal with it.
Overall, this is a story layered with many emotions and conflicts, I would recommend this to everyone.

R. Giridharan’s novel Right under your nose brings a compelling murder mystery narrated with wit.
This is a story of trio Vijay a dedicated and kind police officer, Padmini a passionate journalist with a strong institution, and Dalvi enthusiast and loyal police officer. All three are investigating a murder case of two known scientists and a girl. As the story moves many known names came under suspicion, new friendships bloomed, and shocking truths unravel.
I enjoyed reading this crime fiction, the author pulled me into the story as it turned more complicated, with puzzling twists and weird turns aplenty. I particularly like the descriptive narration which transported me into the dark and terrifying world of the victims and investigators.
Overall, this is a well-crafted story with strong character and an incredible interweaving of mystery.
