A really engaging retelling of the classic story. It feels important to have this literature from the perspective of Jim.
I really did like the story and thought it was a unique twist on the traditional time loop, having a friend stuck there with her - but man oh man did this book drag for the middle 50-60%. It made it really hard to stay engaged.
It was pretty cute and enjoyable. I felt like the lust was believable and the sex scenes were well written. I’m just not sure I bought the love. Fizzy was so unserious for the entire book it made it hard to believe she could be in a serious romance. I get she’s supposed to be this witty, fun loving character, but not everything that comes out of her mouth needs to be a joke or an innuendo. Just a bit more balance of making her a slightly more serious person would have made the love more believable and I certainly could have enjoyed this book more.
I also thought her total freak out about Connor’s revelation was out of character and sort of ridiculous. He did one shitty thing one time as a 24 year old and you’re going to run away without talking about it, when literally ever other awkward or hard conversation you face head on? It didn’t align with the way Fizzy was written for the rest of the book and bothered me maybe more than it should have.
But all in all, a solid 3 or 3.5 stars, depending on how harsh I’m feeling.

My second Ruby Dixon, and I really liked this one! The story was engrossing and I found myself really wanting to know what would happen next. The perfect blend of storyline, magic, and smut, lol.

Romance version of Evelyn Hugo. I liked it! But I read Evelyn Hugo very recently for the first time, so I think I enjoyed it less than I would have if there had been more space between the two reads. I like a grumpy guy turns lover boy moment.
It was…fine? I had a hard time connecting to any of the characters, though I did enjoy Viv and Bitsy. Overall it was definition vanilla. I think it was just a bit too clean for me - ok cool, you super easily got out of your unhappy marriages and the other marriages were either already perfect or became miraculously so? I wish it had been written to be a smidge more believable, but instead it only came across saccharine. It also barely mentioned segregation or the experiences of non-white women in this time period. Unfortunately, I think it missed the mark of what it was trying to do.

I had mixed feelings about this one, but I did enjoy it overall - I might come back and add more thoughts once I’ve had some time to digest it.

Nobody’s writing makes me feel the way Backman’s does. My Friends is another beautiful collection of words about the simplicity and complexity of the human experience. I loved it so much.

Was it good? Probably not. Did I enjoy reading it? Definitely!
It would be much more enjoyable if Marrs wrote complex characters instead of just straight-up villains. I feel like there’s so much potential with this concept, but it just fell flat for me.
