there was a lot that i liked about this book. jane was so infuriating sometimes and because of that, her character arc was perfect in a lot of ways. but damn that shit pissed me off lol like if she had realized her ideas were good enough all along…
there’s the absurdity of la and the people who live there. it’s about writing and art and wanting to make a living from the things that make our culture, as they say in the book.
it was well written and funny and a good story. at times i felt like it was a tad slow but overall i enjoyed it

i can’t imagine growing up with a father like this let alone finding out he was a serial killer. it took a lot of courage to report him and ultimately get him convicted. i disliked how the beginning part wasn’t chronological but other than that it was a compelling read.
The Material by Camille Bordas
i liked the writing style of this book and also the fact that it’s set in chicago - always makes me feel homey & like i can immerse myself in the story, since i get all the references.
there’s a brilliance about this book. how it examines people getting an mfa in standup comedy, the identities of comedians, what they do to get “material,” the cast of characters & personalities it takes to be a comedian. it’s a bit perfect in its absurdity. they’re all walking around, observing life and people, recording random moments in their notes app to mine for material. and the irony is they all get up there and it’s not that great.
the only thing is the perspective shifts in the book made it feel difficult to follow sometimes where you’d be switching back and forth between people in a specific point in time. but other than that it was pretty good for what it was. i feel like i wanted it to take off a bit more but i liked it overall.

this book was a bit heavy handed in terms of writing and messaging. if i made a drinking game out of every time the author mentioned designer brands & her poor, “white trashy” upbringing, i’d absolutely be dead.
it was entertaining to say the least though. every time i thought she’d get caught or something would happen, she somehow managed to overcome it.
despite the heavy handed & somewhat predictable nature, it was an entertaining read. i love a woman who kills. i do think there were a few loose ends but i guess they can be ignored?

this book was atmospheric and i felt like i was in penang. i really enjoyed the characters and their stories and personalities and secrets. i feel like the pacing was steady, although i wanted it to be a bit quicker. the ending was poetic yet vague and i felt like i missed something about who arthur was unless it was supposed to be ethel’s story all along? if that makes sense. i’ve gotta think about that - i can’t help but think i missed some clues along the way.
overall, an immersive book that i liked. the lavender marriages, how terrible that must’ve been.
