Violent, spellbinding, unsettling. Wonderfully written. At it’s core, I suppose it’s about female friendship? But more than that, I think it’s a tale of infatuation. A fascinating book that I didn’t expect what would happen next until the end—when O’Neill had us follow the breadcrumbs to the conclusion. Definitely not a book I would casually recommend, but enjoyed the experience of reading it

Weird and compelling. I disagree with the billing that it’s a mix of The Lottery and Atwood, or that it’s a new “feminist dystopia”—I think it’s a sort of Grimm’s fairy tale for a more modern time? Maybe a little, even, like The Awakening, but spooky? The writing was just sinister enough and the mist of town really felt like it settled over everything. Enjoyed it

The last line!!!!!! Might have bumped it to a 4 star!!!!! Except I was so tired of listening to a man tell a story to another man that I was ready to give up for a lot of the novel! Really exhaustingly like playing telephone—we (as readers) knew Jeff was unreliable, we got it, we didn’t know (honestly tho we suspected) how much till the last line but until then 🤷🏼‍♀️. Fine but annoying.

Important story and well paced. Perkins-Valdez did a great job of giving the novel a sense of place—lots of little details anchored you in the book.

A first warning: probably not a book to read without prep if you’ve cared for someone through a journey with cancer. It was very very well written and an interesting construct: the cancer narrated large parts of the book, which I wasn’t expecting and took some time to understand what was happening. Sad but excellent.

Wanted to like it more than I did, but I think it was wrong time wrong book? Also there was something off with how mature the characters were written for the various ages they were throughout the book I feel, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. It was fine?
