It’s the early 1870s, the civil war has ended a few years ago. A woman named Sethe is living with her 18-year-old daughter Denver in a house that the neighbours avoid because it’s haunted. Then Paul D, Sethe’s fellow slave on her former plantation called Sweet Home, arrives. He drives the raging ghost away, but then a mysterious young woman shows up to the house. Who is she? And why her name is Beloved, the word that is engraved on Sethe’s dead baby’s headstone?
Beloved is a ghost story but not an ordinary one. It’s about the haunting of the soul, things you can’t forget. The role of memory is important in understanding past and dealing with trauma. As a former slave, Sethe has experienced horrible things in her past: killings of her fellow slaves, sexual abuse, taking away her babies, violence. Furthermore, she is forever haunted by the death of her baby.
I can’t emphasize enough how extraordinary writer Morrison was. Her novels flow like poetry. I read Jazz a few years ago and it went straight to my top ten favourite books. It now has a new companion.

Toukokuisena iltana vuonna 1948 Skånen Perstorpissa 9-vuotias Birgitta Sivander lähtee urheilukentälle hakemaan pyöräänsä. Aamulla hän löytyy metsästä kuolleena. Seitsemänkymmentä vuotta myöhemmin Segtnan törmää arkistossa Birgitasta kertovaan lehtijuttuun eikä voi enää unohtaa tätä. Hän alkaa etsiä lisää lehtijuttuja, penkoa arkistoja ja seurata johtolankoja. Mitä Birgitalle tapahtui, miksi joku murhasi pienen tytön? Samaan aikaan Segtnan alkaa odottaa toista lastaan. Äitiyden ilot ja vaikeudet sekoittuvat pelkoon maailman pahuudesta.
Vanhan murhatutkinnan ja vanhemmuuden reflektoinnin yhdistäminen toimii hyvin, vaikka toisaalta kaipasin jälkimmäiseen vielä jotain enemmän. Äitiyden kokemusten kuvailu myös etäännytti, en ole itse äiti, en tavoittanut niitä tunteita. Eikä toki tarvitsekaan, mutta emotionaalisesti kirja jätti minut hieman etäälle.
Nuoren Birgitan murhatutkinta taas piti minut otteessaan – mitä siitä sitten voikaan ajatella, tai yleensä true crimen koukuttavuudesta. Mutta Segtnan kirjoittaa siitä hyvin, kronologisesti pala palalta edeten. Pointtina ei ole löytää murhaajaa, vaan pohtia, mikä saa ihmisen, mahdollisesti jopa lapsen, tekemään sellaisen teon. Osansa saa myös kyseenalaisesti suoritettu tutkinta ja poliisin arveluttava toiminta.
Ihan kiinnostava kirja, ennen kaikkea muodoltaan, se toimii. Mutta ei kuitenkaan tarpeeksi minua.

There is something very disturbing in Shirley Jackson’s stories. However, the threat is rather hidden below the surface than clearly visible: people are never quite what they seem, and cruelty is inherent in humanity at all ages.
”The Lottery” is Jackson’s most famous short story, published in the New Yorker in 1948. It stirred such strong reactions that people canceled their subscriptions and sent hundreds of angry letters to Jackson and the publisher. While the story is quite sinister, in my opinion, it isn’t the best one in the collection.
I appreciated more of the stories that touch on womanhood, domesticity, and how women were treated at the time. “Elizabeth” is a good example of that, but many of the stories have a female point of view.
I also loved the stories that deal with mental health. “Pillar of Salt”, for instance, is about a mental breakdown of a New Hampshire wife during a trip to the New York City. One of the most surreal ones is “The Tooth”, where a woman has her rotten tooth removed and the lines between real and unreal become blurred.
There are also interesting stories about racism and living in the Jim Crow era in America. In “Flower Garden”, a housewife becomes good friends with a new neighbour, but turns her down when she hires a black man as her gardener.
I always feel so cosy reading Jackson. I love how subtle her writing is – how it first appears she is describing normal, everyday life, but actually there’s always something unsettling in the characters’ lives.
“She looked into the mirror as though into a group of strangers, all staring at her; no one was familiar in the group, no one smiled at her or looked at her with recognition; you’d think my own face would know me, she thought, with a queer numbness in her throat. - - Perhaps it’s not a mirror, she thought, maybe it’s a window and I’m looking straight through at women washing on the other side. But there were women combing their hair and consulting the mirror; the group was on her side, and she thought, I hope I’m not the blonde, and lifted her hand and put it on her cheek.”

Katsoin pari vuotta sitten hienon HBO:n minisarjan Scenes from a Marriage, jota tähdittävät Jessica Chastain ja Oscar Isaac. Sen jälkeen onkin tehnyt mieli katsoa alkuperäinen, Ingmar Bergmanin käsikirjoittama ja ohjaama sarja vuodelta 1973, mutta päädyin Helmet-lukuhaasteen innoittamana lukemaan sen ensin kirjana.
Kohtauksia eräästä avioliitosta kuvaa keski-ikäisten Johanin ja Mariannen parisuhdetta ja avioeroa kuuden dialogiin perustuvan kohtauksen kautta. Bergman on itse sanonut, että ”näiden kohtausten kirjoittamiseen meni kaksi ja puoli kuukautta, niiden kokemiseen aikuisen ihmisen elämä.” Kokemus välittyy dialogista.
Johan ja Marianne elävät keskiluokkaista kiiltokuvaelämää, johon kuuluvat oma koti, kaksi lasta, kesämökki, hyvät ammatit, viikottaiset päivälliset molempien perheiden kanssa ja hyväntahtoinen naureskelu nuoruuden poliittiselle kiihkeydelle. Kulissien takana kuitenkin kuohuu ja turhautuminen kasvaa. Mariannen yllätysraskaus ja abortti on käänne, joka lopulta suistaa suhteen raiteiltaan, mutta taustalla on erityisesti Johanin tunnekylmyys ja kykenemättömyys kunnolliseen keskusteluun ja Mariannen valtava miellyttämisen tarve.
Johan ja Marianne eroavat, mutta eivät voi kokonaan irrottautua toisistaan. Tulevina vuosina he kohtaavat ja keskustelevat, yrittävät ottaa selvää siitä mikä heidän suhteessaan meni pieleen. Dialogi on usein vimmaista ja kiihkeää, mutta välillä keskustelutkaan eivät auta, vaan turvaudutaan fyysisiin tekoihin. Jotain kehittymistäkin tapahtuu: Marianne löytää itsenäisyytensä ja Johan tajuaa oman keskeneräisyytensä.
Kohtauksia eräästä avioliitosta on julma ja kivulias, mutta rehellinen. Ilmestymisajankohtanaan sitä (niin kirjaa kuin tv-sarjaa) lienee pidetty myös rohkeana raadollisen avioliiton ja avioeron, abortin, seksin ja väkivallan kuvauksen vuoksi. Myös porvarillisten seinien suojissa voi tapahtua näitä asioita!
Pidin tässä erityisesti dialogin tarkkanäköisyydestä ja kiihkeydestä. Näytelmiä voisi lukea useamminkin.
