I would give this 2 and a half stars. While I really was enthralled by the parts of H.H. Holmes and the crimes he committed during the world fair in Chicago, the beginning was oh so boring. I was at the brink of falling asleep countless of times! I was tired of hearing about the specific plans of these white old men arguing over what kind of architecture should be present and then to what buildings. I did like Larson's style but sometimes, it was just way too in detail. maybe Larson should've taken a break on the details of these old men and more on the mystery that still hangs around H.H. Holmes.
I really loved this book! Although it was a bit slow for me in the beginning, it picked up pace in the middle. I appreciated Kristoffs writing in how it was relaxed, personal and quite humorous. The cast of characters were unique and what I hadn't seem in books before. When I picked this book up i expected something a lot different then what I got, and I'm very happy about that! already starting Godsgrave.
This book, where do I even start?? It was simply phenomenal! The battles, the twists and turns, the humor that Jay Kristoff always instills, to me saying 'no that cannot be the end' just as the last page predicted. Jay Kristoff defiantly stepped up his game since the first book of the Nevernight chronicle. I cannot wait to bury my face into the 3rd edition of this series and see how this tale unfolds.
I really enjoyed this book from start to end. I loved the concept of this book, and I could definitely tell it came from the mind of V.E Schwab. Although it was her first book I could see her normal style forming, which was something I really loved seeing. I could tell in some parts she was timid in her writing to make bigger risks in her writing, but I'm still happy with it overall. I loved the world she created in this story, and while it does have forms of magic in it, it's toned down from her usual writings. As always V.E Schwab is one of my favorite authors and I desperately wish I could jump into any of the worlds she has created. I cannot wait for her new book to come out later this year and many more to come!
Children of Blood and Bone was nothing like I've ever read before! I'll admit it took me a little bit to get into, a lot of the terms I could not keep track of couldn't pronounce. But as soon as the book started to get into the nitty-gritty (sooner than you'd think) I couldn't tear myself away from it. The characters were well built and rounded and it was hard not to dislike anyone. I loved the concept of tribal magic and the wat Adeyemi described magic. It made me want to be a Maji too. My only issue was that there were rules that were broken in the world from a character (I won't say what, that'll give away plot points!) and it was never really explained why. Maybe it will be in the second book, which I'm excited to dive into!! I cannot wait what Tomi Adeyemi brings next, because I have a feeling I'm in for a ride.
What can I say? Overall this book was eh. To quote my friends, it has the premise of Hillbilly Elegy but reads like Devil in the White City without any of the interesting parts. I thought some of the stories were interesting, like the parker closet stories. Other than that nothing appealed to me, all the names were the common ones of middle-aged white Americans it was honestly hard to keep track. While this book was informative about what happened to towns during the time of the recession, I felt like I got nothing out of it. Every time I put the book down I felt more depressed, nothing was going right with these peoples lives and didn't look on getting better anytime soon. It wasn't uplifting, to say the least.
I finally got around to finish this collection of stories and I'm glad I did! I'm already a big fan of the world Leigh Bardugo has created so it could be said that I was excited that I got my hands on a copy of the book (bookstores around me seemed like they never had this book available). The stories were enriching and brought me closer to the Grishaverse. To top it off, Sara Kipins illustrations throughout the book are absolutely gorgeous! I loved seeing them progress into the full pieces of art as I read on. I highly recommend this if you are a fan of the Grishaverse and Bardugos work, or just want to read a story that has the spin of a fairytale.
This book took me longer to read, saying I read about half of it last year, lost interest, and picked it up again yesterday. Overall it was meh. The characters are forgettable and at times boring. I feel like the story could have been moved better if the author didn't rely so heavily on the story of the Little Mermaid. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of mermaid stories, to begin with, so I thought I might enjoy this a bit more with the aspect of the main character having bloodlust for humanity. But the story this time was not as promising. The plot was very predictable. The highlights of this book is the end where the big fight scene happens. I just wish during it the author wouldn't describe every wound with the ripping of flesh. Overall The story was alright, a bit boring at points and nothing unique from its pages.
