I enjoyed this much more than the first book in the series; very glad I forged ahead!

First book in the Hellions of Halsted Hall series, and it didn’t really hit for me. Fake engagements are a tough trope for me to suspend disbelief, and I didn’t really understand why the MCs liked each other (other than being repeatedly told they did). Plus the whole thing progressed way too fast, especially given that the FMC is searching for her missing fiance - they were doing stuff in a carriage within a day or two of meeting, while she was still technically engaged.

I am however going to try the next in the series. I liked the writing, I’m curious about the future MCs, and there’s a bit of a murder mystery I’m hoping I’ll see solved.

This book is atmospheric and almost cinematic in some of the descriptions and settings. The plot is original and unusual; it’s not always pleasant, but it was rich and complex.

I did have some gripes with the behavior of the main characters - Giles in particular was sort of inconsistent and hard to relate to his behavior. But on the other hand, the story reflected on the ways in which grief, loss, and guilt play out for different people, and I think his actions can certainly be viewed through those lenses.

Definitely looking forward to reading more by this author in future.

The Duke at Hazard is a fantastic conclusion to a great series. Featuring KJ Charles’ usual emotional depth and truly lovely characters, so many capers and schemes, and possibly the best groveling I’ve ever read in a romance. Plus a hearty sprinkle of consensual somnophilia, which isn’t my thing, but it definitely is Sev’s and I love that for him.

A Thief in the Night is a perfect HR romp: Charming and complicated lead characters with shady pasts! Highway robbery! Long lost precious jewels! My only regret is that the book wasn't longer.

KJ Charles is so good at writing intimacy that’s never gratuitous and always in service to the plot and the character development, and this book is no exception.

Delightful HR about a bunch of flawed-but-well-meaning people, with lots of secrets and mostly terrible extended family members. KJ Charles' writing is fantastic as ever, super clever and enjoyable to read. A perfect HEA. And the secondary characters were all so well-developed and interesting. But ultimately I think they took away from the main plot a little bit? Felt like there could have been a whole other book written about
Giles and Marianne
.

The way the two MCs’ relationship started (
sleeping together as repayment for a debt one MC owed to the other
) was a bit of a buzzkill for me, but I suppose it all worked out in the end.

I really enjoyed the writing, and Raya was a fantastic character; I loved reading about her business pursuits. But Anthony was an annoying MMC (literally could not stop talking or thinking about sex at! all! times! so exhausting), and I didn't really understand the thought process underling several characters' actions. For example Raya was getting close with Anthony while also believing that
he possibly murdered her aunt and might murder her too
? Seemed a little weird.

All that said, I'm going to read the next in the series when it comes out because I think this author has a lot of potential for me -- this particular book just wasn't quite my thing.

This was really cute and well-done for what it is, which is a short and steamy instalove novella with a slightly bonkers premise! I enjoyed it, but I also wanted a little more. Looking forward to reading other work by this author.
