Just a little too cutesy for me. Also, hello, abortion *was* possible in the 50s. Not legal, but possible.

The Accidental Pinup

Good god, the writing was horrid. Did an editor even glance at these pages?

Fun, fast-paced thriller(ish) with a really memorable and clearly drawn first-person narrator. I wish the asides to the reader had been more consistent — they basically fall aside as the action heats up — and there is at least one unexplained plot detail that didn’t ring true. But these are minor quibbles about a really delightful novel.

A little repetitive / overly long, but otherwise a fun will they / won’t they romance.

Really loved this novel, which is totally accessible to the non-gamer.

Jami Attenberg is delightful company. Lots of great thoughts on writing and making a home in the world.

I want to live in Catherine Newman’s world, where everyone is a quirky, intelligent delight and even deep sadness is accompanied by glittering joy. This novel frustrated me for its lack of jerks and real-life challenges (other than the whole dying-best-friend situation), as well as for the unrelenting delightful quirkiness. At the same time, it says something beautiful and true about death and friendship and love and loss.

This middle grade novel is so sensitively observed, full of sly humor and real affection for the delightfully imperfect characters who populate it. I sobbed at the ending, which is rare for me.

So long, and yet so shallow. Still, I kept reading (through what felt like 10 false endings) to find out what happened.

I think a little of the shine has worn off of Lucy Barton, though as ever Strout’s writing is spare and elegant, and says so much. I wonder if anyone has put together a family tree of her characters? I found myself a little irritated that Olive Kitteredge is mentioned a few times in this one; it seems like a lot to ask of readers and I’m not sure the mention did anything for this novel at all.
