"Why it is so much easier to write about the things we dislike/hate/acknowledge to be flawed than the things we love"

I find myself unable to write this review. Where should i start? The books? A.J.'s personality? Maya?
First off, It's a cozy read. It talks about books and life and love with a bit of a mystery running in the background.
I've always romanticized managing your own bookstore, combining that with living on an island is a dream.
Ugh, my brain is broke. I don't know what to say to give this book justice.
I almost cried when A.J. died. I think losing your ability to think, understand, and be understood is the worst. It broke my heart when he tried to say something to his daughter, but she couldn't understand. Then, he decided he would try again tomorrow. Only there wasn't tomorrow.

The memoir writer is very interesting.
Leon Friedman
, aka Leonora Ferris
, made a pretty good point about the impact of books and stories. Does it really have to be real events for it to have real feelings? No, of course it doesn't. I love fiction. I got into reading after I picked up "The Book Thief" ( I loved its mention in the book btw) I was amazed at how written fiction can make me feel so much! And that's the magic of it. It gives you the experience of living multiple lives while we read different perspectives. It also teaches us to have empathy.

"You know everything you need to know about a person from the answer to the question, What is your favorite book?"

"Which book has had the greatest influence on your life?"

I tried to think of an answer to these two questions. I could say The Book Thief since it got me back into reading, and I feel like books affect my life every day. It's also a favorite of mine.

I liked the formal narration style and how, at the beginning of each chapter, we get A.J. POV
, which is making me sad thinking about it now. I hoped the new sales rep was bringing Maya's book. Was that too much to ask for?

To conclude this mess of a review, it was a heartwarming journey, and I liked most of it.

The story didn't resonate with me, and when I got to the spice scenes, I just couldn't continue reading.
To be fair, I went into reading this book, knowing it's a genre I don't prefer, with the intention of getting out of my comfort zone. Well, I won't be doing that again.

I bought this book because of a sale. I didn’t know much about it, but I liked the theme and the book cover, so I bought it.
I didn’t think I would love it this much! It reminded me of why I love historical fiction! The characters aren’t real, but the experience is! This is a story I’ll be thinking about for a long time. I’m just surprised that I’ve never heard of the Wilhelm Gustloff, despite it being the deadliest disaster in maritime history. I’m glad Ruta Sepetys is contributing to its recognition.
War is ugly. Some use it as an excuse for their horrible actions, but most people just want to live peacefully with their families and loved ones and don’t care about politics. It saddens me that innocent civilians are caught in the crossfire. Unfortunately, war isn’t something in the past; it’s still affecting many innocent people in Gaza right this moment.
I can’t bring myself to talk about the plot and characters because I’m still processing it, and it’s making me so sad.
Joana the nurse. Florian the artist. Emilia the selfless. Heinz the shoe poet. Ingrid the blind. Klaus the wandering boy. Halinka the baby. Eva the sorry giant. And last and definitely least, Alfred the idiot.
It's silly, but I hoped the shoe poet would emerge from somewhere and be alive. Emilia as well was just too young, but I realize that many died who were much younger than her, and my heart breaks even more. Joana and Florian's romance was sweet, I'm glad they survived and raised the kids. Alfred is a lunatic and a bit exaggerated but represents those who obey such ruthless rulers and believe in them.

I'm feeling so many emotions right now that I can't put into words. It's a sign of a 5-star read.

The ending is a bit underwhelming for me. I understand the idea of not necessarily having a happy ending in reality, but books reveal snippets of a life, a certain journey, a story of an aspect in life. This book is about how Belle steps into an enchanted castle and decides to try and break its curse, which is eventually partially achieved since all the servants become human again except for the Beast, who actually has a name but for some reason Belle still refers to him as the Beast. Anyway, Belle and the Beast are embarking on a journey to gather all the les charmentes and with their combined power they may be able to break his curse. And that's it. The end. It is an incomplete book, not just an open ending. I will confess that in the Disney movie I preferred the prince as a beast rather than a human, but still.

At the beginning, I was truly excited because I felt like the book was filling in the gaps and unanswered questions in the movie. For example, why did Maurice enter this eerie castle in the first place? Why did the Beast imprison him?
We know from reading the two timelines that Maurice and Rosalind lived in the prince's kingdom, and therefore he probably recognizes the castle. He knew his wife went to the castle and never returned. Maybe something reminded him of her, and he went to find her? And when he confronted the Beast, who was cursed by his wife, he imprisoned him for being the husband of the enchantress! Not for merely trespassing.
That's what I was theorizing. To my disappointment, nothing was explained. Her father randomly went to that castle, and the angry, overreacting Beast locked him up for that. I mean, he would have said it was because he didn't want Maurice going off telling people about the Beast and they would come for him, pitchforks and all. I hate that we got NOTHING!

Belle's mother, the enchantress. I was waiting for a really good explanation about why she cursed an eleven-year-old for the actions of his now-dead parents. Not only that, she cursed all the servants in the castle along with him. She said and I quote, "I thought I was saving what was left of a kingdom. I thought I was avenging all who had been hurt by your parents' actions."
I have reached this page after reading 468 pages, and this is what I get for an explanation.
I hoped that this was part of a bigger plan and that she wasn't just going to curse everyone and leave, but she didn't know that someone was going to kidnap her and the spell would be left unfinished. It's just stupid and contradictory that she actually did that a year after making a protective spell that included the same little prince.

The writing isn't that great either. What helped me imagine the scenes was what I remembered from the movie, not the actual descriptions themselves.

Another thing that annoyed me was the use of French words since I don't understand them. I know it's to remind us that the characters are indeed French, but there's a tiny detail that confused me. Rosalind was trying to send hints to Belle when she was trapped in the castle. She was able to whisper disconnected words to her: "betrayed betrayed stay away stay safe away from dark."
Belle thought she should stay away from the dark, but her mother was referring to D'Arque, the lunatic who kidnapped her. How was she confused when they're all supposedly speaking French??? I looked it up, and to my knowledge, "dark" isn't a French word, so why did Belle misunderstand? Am I nitpicking because I'm disappointed in the ending? Yes, I think I am.

I loved the movie ever since I was a kid. I still love it with all its imperfections, mainly due to nostalgia. I also love reading retellings of the story but always end up being disappointed.
It's not a bad book. It held my attention for hours in a single sitting, and I guess that's something.

Epilepsy

Well, there's a lot of repetition and fillers. It's also disgusting, a lot of infidelity.
She cheated on her husband, and when she got sick her husband Ben and best friend Claire were in a relationship (and they felt guilty about it all the time 🙄 but fortunately she's an amnesiac she wouldn't know) her best friend has a child and she doesn't care about marrying his father... also her son Adam has a girlfriend who is pregnant. Despite everything how can she forgive her best friend and husband? Obviously it happened because of how casually they regard intercourse. It's filthy and vile. The saddest thing of all is that this is her only circle, the only people who "care" about her. That can't be realistic. Oh I forgot, she was also thinking about her much younger doctor in an inappropriate way, although at some point it wasn't just thinking. The 18+ scenes were long and bothersome, sometimes it seems like the protagonist's mind revolves around lust. Now to the plot, it was predictable but I also wanted to know how everything played out in the end so good on the author for that, but it was stretched thin, it shouldn't have taken this many pages to tell the story. On a last note, how can everyone be so careless regarding their job? How can she be discharged from that care house without any official procedures that would eventually prove Mike isn't who he claims to be? And the POLICE!!! IT TOOK THEM A WEEK TO ACTUALLY GET ON THE CASE!! but they immediately were able to track Ben down and get him from italy??? Anyways, I guess the moral of the story is, don't cheat on your husband. Or else you might lose 20+ years of your life.

I didn't like it as much as Six Crimson Cranes. Although it was fast-paced, I was a bit bored, and the plot felt weak, like why would you go through all this trouble? What's at stake?
Kiki has been and still is my favorite character. I don't know why but I sympathize with her the most. If something happens to this little paper bird I don't think my heart can take it. 🥹
