I went into this story not expecting such a masterpiece! Don’t let the happy cover fool you this story was heartbreaking in the best of ways! We follow Helen and Grant after he is hired as a writer for Helen’s book-to-show adaption. The peak into the screenwriting process was fascinating! The conversations and dialogue in this story were so real, and full, and complete. The story was in 3rd person and I loved how we switched from Helen’s to Grant’s POV within the same scene - the effect was that it felt very intimate. Like you were in the room with them. I love the commentary on eldest immigrant daughters and then how much the story really leaned into grief and loss. There are a few trigger warnings that as usual I recommend googling before starting this one. Calling this novel a rom-com just doesn’t do it justice. I argue it feels almost more like literary fiction. I’m so excited to have discovered this story and will anxiously wait to read what else this author comes out with!

I’m so hyped to finally be staring this series! In Throne of Glass we follow Celaena Sardothien, the world’s greatest assassin, after she is selected to compete in the king’s competition. If she wins and serves as the Kings Champion for four years she will earn her freedom. Along the way she meets the Crown Prince, the Captain of the Guard and a foreign Princess. This was a solid first book in the series giving us a lot of background on our characters and the world. I gave this one four stars only because there is still so much we don’t know! We are given little easter eggs and it’s clear something bigger is brewing but I’m just going to have to continue the series to find out. I really enjoy how many small scenes we got between characters, I love how fierce Celaena is, and that ending!! My only con would be that we spent the whole book in the glass castle and I would’ve loved to have switched up the setting at some point but maybe that comes later in the series. Overall, I have full faith in Maas to deliver with this story!

The Fury by Alex Michaelides!! This thriller is so unique in that the narrator breaks the fourth wall and speaks to the reader directly while he recounts the story of this murder on an island. It is kind of like a parody on a Greek tragedy and the story isn’t told in a linear way. You go back and forth on the timeline constantly and just when you think you know what is happening you really don’t. This was a great summer thriller but go into it knowing you will hate all the characters and that things get confusing before they make sense!

In this second chance romance we follow Yasmen and Josiah Wade two years after their divorce. They are trying to navigate grief, loss, and mental health problems while also co-parenting their two kids and running a restaurant business! This story was raw and real with some of the best depictions of counseling and mental health I’ve ever read. I gave if four stars only because some of the women’s fiction aspects were hard to for me to connect with since I am personally not in the phase of life that the characters are in. But overall this was a great read and I will be reading book 2 (This Could Be Us)!

P.S. I read both the physical and audio for this one and loved the audio because there is a male and female voice for the different POVs.

P.S.S. This takes place in Atlanta, GA which was super fun as a Georgia native.

If you are looking for a creepy, found-family, stand-alone fantasy that is about 260 pages then you need to check out Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher. This fairytale follows a princess turned almost-nun as she enlists the help of a wacky cast of characters including a dog made of bone and a demon chicken (I’m not kidding) to help her with her hopeless quest of killing a prince! Check this out when you want a good laugh, a creepy time, and an easy 5 star read!

Alright guys I promised you a review on the second book in The Sacred Stones series and here it is! In A Promise of Peridot we are back with Arwen immediately after the events of book 1 (A Dawn of Onyx). She spends the majority of this story coping with some tragic events and there is a quest for a magical weapon. There is something really cozy about coming back to a familiar story with characters we already know. There were some less than perfect moments like the love triangle between Kane, Arwen, and a new character Federik that feels very forced. And in general that is my biggest complaint. A lot of things feel very forced and every emotion is described with huge intensity. The effect of this is that you never really feel the story climax - with that said I gave this one 3 stars. I still think it’s an enjoyable read and who knows I might read book 3 (A Reign of Rose) in October just to see how this story comes to an end. ⭐️❤️

A Dawn of Onyx is book 1 in The Sacred Stones trilogy. This is a romantic fantasy that gives ACOTAR vibes but is not quite so complex – less backstory and world-building. We follow our girl Arwen Valondale after she is taken prisoner by an enemy kingdom. Nothing is quite as it seems and Arwen is slowly learning there is more out in the world then what she was told in her small village. There’s magic, beasts, secrets, evil kings, and forbidden forests! But don’t let this crazy map fool you because I gave this one 4 stars. I felt that the stakes were not really that high and that some of the plot twists at the end were random. I want to see more character development and world-building in the next book! For now I think my interest is peaked enough to continue the series and I’ll be sure to give you my full thoughts when I’m done.

Book 2: A Promise of Peridot
Book 3: A Reign of Rose (Oct. 2024)
