apart from the lacklustre nature of the writing behind the protagonist, i was slightly uncomfortable by the way some things were written. i don't mean in a 'oh, the possibility of this dystopia occurring makes me so unsettled, truly the sign of a great writer!' but rather in a 'this author does not sound like a good person.' and i was right! rapist and racist, also a part of the imperialist system that his purported opposition was directed against. also, trying to utilise marxist principles to create an anti-proletariat society? nice try!

read this when i found out that the episode of the haunting of bly manor focusing on viola and perdita was based on this short story. there were quite a few changes in this story and it also fleshed out and is better at clearly stating the intentions and reasoning behind the actions of the characters, but i still think the episode did it justice keeping in mind the limited runtime that it had

like most readers, jo was my favourite. however, i will also defend my sister amy

if this were my first book by arundhati roy, i may have rated it higher and reviewed it in a better light. however, knowing how well the god of small things was written, i think this shines relatively less. there were interesting characters this time around as well, but less of a plot.

wry and cynical, with a protagonist whose mind wanders like careless, curious fingers in the dark over every surface and crevice not with a sense of impending doom as would be expected, but rather with an air of resignation and leftover fascination

wonderfully illustrated and rendered account of jyotiba phule and savitribai phule and their fight to eradicate illiteracy in the face of strong casteist opposition

my man goes through life with unabashed optimism, boundless naivete, and pinkerton's stain remover

beautiful art and a wonderful retelling of everyone's favourite eco-terrrist lesbian body horror villain !

a very beautiful collection of short stories, like dark tangled vines that shine with a poisonous gleam in the night. i really enjoyed marjorie m. liu's writing and cannot wait to read more from her !
