The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson
5.0
This book is similar in tone and pace to Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood". In my mind I conceptually likened this book to 4 trains located at disparate locations. The trains each travel very slowly along tracks at a slight decrease to meet at a singular point. As a reader, I felt more seduced by the detail that Larson offered than that imminent collision of plots.
Literary structure is not my forte, so I really can't comment on that, but the intricacy of description and the admitted authoritative freedoms made the story fascinating.
I savored this book like a great meal, or glass of whiskey, or cigar.....I began to get sad as it neared its conclusion...

Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream by Buzz Bissinger
5.0
The critical success of the television series actually takes away from the gritty reality that Bissinger evokes. While reading this, I could see the expansive Texas landscape and sympathize with the despair each of these characters faced. Bissinger's crass persona bleeds through the text while pulling the reader along this heartbreaking emotional journey of a Texas town enveloped by both annually renewed hope and inevitably failed dreams.
