I love a fellow người Việt Nam <3.

No but seriously the main character being half-vietnamese was a welcome surprise and the romance was cute snd sweet.

This was the first ever romance I’ve read between characters over the ages of 30 and I loved it.

They’re so snarky and funny and it was such a cute read. Maggie Lê is this complete no nonsense,  wonderful, amazing woman. Absolute firecracker.

Aiden is this big tough teddy bear of a man who also takes no one’s B.S. They’re perfect for each other. Also, because they are older and experienced, all the common break up tropes like miscommunication. Gone. Deceased. Disappeared. They talked like adults (because they are adults). Super cute wintery romance.

*Violent gurgling sounds*

This was so cute and sweet I think I rotted out all of my teeth. But also I cried a little.

I love the men in Talia Hibbert’s books. They are all 10/10 healthy love interest (or trying) and do a wonderful job at showing how much they love the female love interests.

Now, Chloe. The star of the show. She’s so delectably wonderful. She is snarky, and a grump, and a mild priss yet she is so fun and wild and has the most wonderfully dry sense of humor ( or perhaps Talia Hibbert has a dry sense of humor).

Redford is jebsbdkek. Wonderful man. Beautiful gentleman. A little flawed but that makes him better in some ways.

The book was wonderfully funny and sexy and perfect. Once again a Brown Sister book has blown me away.

3/3 In the brown sister trilogy. Finally complete. (I read it backwards)

*Strangled choking noised*

They’re so cute I think I threw up 40 lbs of glucose syrup that somehow manifested from the sheer sweetness of the characters.

Dani. Omg. DANIKA “DANI” BROWN. She is so fine. She is so funny and omg she is so unapologetically horny. And her and Zaf together is such a fun dynamic. She’s the unconventional unromantic academic type and Raf is this mildly brooding but secretly a huge romantic type.  They just fit.

The character’s are written like people. Their dynamics, the teasing, the bonds, etc its all so perfect.

Talia Hibbert has a way to write these characters in a way that is both hilarious and multi-dimensional. She writes thoughts like they are actual thoughts and not just words.

2/3 in the Brown Sister’s Trilogy. Up next is Chloe Brown.

I think the most amazing thing a book can do is have characters that feel like people. Real people with real lives.

Wyn and Harriet might have been the main characters but the other cast of characters felt so alive I couldn’t help but root for all of them.

This book is a beautiful, fun, and heartfelt story about second-chances, family, love, and growth. It took my heart and helped it beat just a little but faster.

Despite being Vietnamese-American, I never read a story before that tackled the issues within the Asian  community so poignantly before. A few essays, short books that touched on the subject, even some video documentaries, etc. but never a book. Not like this one.

The visceral pain and anger I felt reading this gripped me. I felt like crying every single chapter. The author does an incredible job exploring Asian Hate, racism, systematic racism, depression, and Asian-Black solidarity.

The author took the asian shared history in America and wrote a book that expressed our pain and experiences in a beautiful collection of chapters and poems.

In 2020 I feared that one day I’d wake up to find my grandparents or my parents beaten to death on the streets. In 2024 I read a book that expressed my fear in grief in a way I never could. I couldn’t explain to my friends why I was always so angry, why I became so jaded, why I started to hate existing in my own country.

Now I can.

Yup. I read this.

Actual Review:

It was honestly a pretty fun(ny) book. I personally struggled to take any of it seriously. It’s a Priest/Stepbrother x Stepsister romance and yet somehow  that (The stepcest) still didn’t put me off. The character’s do genuinely have interesting motivations and backstories that fuel them and I can totally see the reason behind their (ridiculous) actions. I read it off wattpad (yeah i know) and the comment section made the experience way more fun and 10x harder to take seriously.

Honestly, their motivations would have been 10x more compelling if not for the excessive horniness the characters experienced. The amount of times they go like “We can’t do this it’s wrong!” And then proceed to do it in the most inappropriate settings possible is beyond me. Of which only fed into my complete disbelief and struggle to follow along without cackling.

The FMC is honestly well written (for the most part) and interesting. She has an interesting and complete girl-boss personality that I adored.

The priest is a horny simp. He’s cool though so I give him a pass. Sort of.
(I swear his dick takes up half his brain power, how is he a priest???)

This is a story about idiots. Lovable, wonderful, endearing idiots. But, nonetheless, idiots.

Frederick Backman from my experience with his books has a way of writing characters that makes them feel real, real in sometimes uncomfortable and but wonderful ways. He writes about the human experience with vivid language that could make you cry and laugh at the same time and your brain goes to mush trying to figure out what you should do first. That being crying or laughing.

This story is about the interconnected lives of strangers. Strangers who have nothing to do with each other and everything all at once.

It all started when a bank robber robbed a bank and then held them up as hostages and when a man jumped off a bridge and a girl tried to but couldn’t.
