I really expected more from this book.
From the description, I thought it was a story about a platonic male friendship, which is such a rare story nowadays. Instead, it was a twist I kind of saw coming but had hoped wouldn’t happen. The book described John and Mary having such a special bond, only for two men to be intimate with each other, and then for her to just propose that they become a throuple???
Also, the ending was vague, and I didn’t like that because I wanted to know what kind of life the characters had after the main conflict. The story could’ve gone many ways, and the way it ended up taking was the most predictable and lazy. I don’t get it, and I’m disappointed about squandered potential.

The Overstory

Richard Powers

DID NOT FINISH: 34%

I really wanted to like this book. I really wanted to give Richard Powers a second chance. This book won the Pulitzer Prize, so I thought, it can't be that bad, right? If I were going to give any of his books a chance, this should be the one, right?

Well, I was thoroughly bored. The idea was amazing; the execution was horrible. I felt like having nine main characters was way too many. I also didn’t care for almost any of them. I understand the book was about trees, but it was annoying to have to Google something on almost every page because the author constantly threw "tree/plant jargon" at you.

I usually finish all books, even if I don’t like them that much. I couldn’t help myself here, though; it was a pure slog. God knows I tried, really tried, to like this book and this author, but alas.

The best self-help book I’ve ever read! Almost no fillers, extremely helpful advice. It seemed to me that the author understood human psychology and biology very well. Based on that, his suggested habit improvements truly resonated with me, and I’m sure they will resonate with others.

The book did slog a little here and there due to a lot of repetitions, but overall it was a great read. I felt like it had gone to a therapist because it genuinely changed my outlook on life.
