Lemme be a hater for a moment
I barely got through this book. The only reason I finished it was the plot twist at the end.

Short review: Entertaining, gripping and a great read for the winter.

Plot:
One Dark Window tells the story of the town of Blunder, surrounded by a salty mist that claims lives, kept at bay only by charms and providence cards. In the town shrouded with mist, children are infected with a fever, which if they survive, grants them magic. But everything, comes at a price. The children start degenerating, some lose their body and some, their mind. The wary king orders his destriers and physicians to capture all the helpless children and anyone who dares hide them at all. The mysterious infection a death sentence, the infected declared feral, magic becomes something to fear.
The providence cards provide a safe way to use magic, with no great consequence or price. Prophecy declares that the providence cards, if reunited and secured with the blood of an infected, would banish the mist and cure all who suffer.
Elspeth Spindle has a secret. It's not the kind other little girls her age kept, their prettiest dresses or cutest bears, she had a 500 year old monster living in her head, and she did not know, when it would claim it's debt.

Review:
What I liked:
☂ The writing style was pretty engaging, and i listened to the audiobook, which made it all the more immersive.
☂ The magic system was simple but intricate and elaborate and did not leave much to the imagination, which is exactly how I like it. The cards and the spirit were easy to understand, but fascinating nonetheless.
☂ The plot revolving around the cards and the world building was well done, I found no reasonable holes in the world building. All my questions were answered eventually
☂ The plot and the motivations of all the characters seemed pretty reasonable.
What I disliked:
☂ The cast: The cast, aside from our main character, Elspeth, do not possess much personality. Rayven Yew, all we know about him is his job, his family and his motivations for doing what he does. There is not much in his life aside from all this, we do not know what he likes what he dislikes. I genuinely could not predict how he would act in a certain situation if I am asked to predict. He is predictable, simple, kind and trusting, but unpredictable, suspicious, cunning and an anomaly at the same time.
The rest of the cast is pretty similar. Jespyr, we know nothing about. Iona who I thought would serve the role of the token best friend, had not much of a character either. The author has a diverse cast full of interesting people with motives but none of them seem to have a past or a future.
☂ THE CONSTANT RHYMES AND POEMS: Oh my god I don't know how I got through them. The narrator did a good job with them but it took me out of the story EVERY SINGLE TIME. They're so cringe and don't even make sense half the time. -1 star just cause of this.
Conclusion: nice. idk if I'll continue the series. It was a good time though.
