dark reflective tense slow-paced

This was a quick read, I got through it in one sitting. It’s more slice of life with a dash of horror elements, but not anything that’ll leave you or a 12 year old reader terrified. It’s a good coming of age story and something I’d recommend to fans of This One Summer in terms of how the story progresses. There are a few brief scenes of nudity but those are tied to puberty and changing bodies. I’d recommend this to middle school and up.

I don’t think I’ll be continuing with this series. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous but the plot is a bit too macabre for me personally. I also have mixed feelings about bringing together gods and archangels from so many different cultures without giving those individual cultures a little more attention.

This book is very slow paced but that seems to be intentional. The illustrations of old photographs give off a nostalgic vibe and I enjoyed how the storylines began to come together in the end. The illustrations were wonderful and I was surprised to see so many on each page. There were times where the conversation was hard for me to follow at the beginning due to the way that the “photos” are incorporated but I started to get the hang of it a quarter of the way through. Overall, I enjoyed the story and I’m probably going to give my copy to one of my younger cousins to read.

I really enjoyed this anthology. Prior to finding it at the library, I didn’t know graphic novel anthologies were a thing. My favorite stories from this collection were School Spirit, The Ruby Equation, and Beauties. I’m interested in seeing if there’s more work with the characters from School Spirit and The Ruby Equation. I read The Magic Fish last year and it was nice to see Trung Le Nguyen’s art style in Beauties.

This was such a wonderfully told story. As I was listening to the audiobook I was thinking, at least half of this had to actually have happened. It’s so amazing how authors can draw from their own experiences to send these lessons to kids (and adult readers too!) and I think Kelly Yang does a wonderful job of doing that in Front Desk. Highly recommend!

So many feelings. I’m still reeling over the end of the last chapter but I think this one picks up in a good place, I just wish I had a complete volume to go through. There are still so many lingering questions and I’m sure we’ll get to at least some of those soon.

I read this for my Artificial Intelligence class and it was honestly fascinating. So much of the humor works really well throughout and the story itself is very well told. As I was reading it, I thought about the Netflix film “Don’t Look Up” and how this situation could apply to our own world today.

I have so many feelings and nowhere to put them. I want to scream but it’s past midnight and I don’t want to wake up my entire neighborhood. I was under the impression that this was the end of the series since this volume came out in 2018 but *thankfully* there’s supposed to be a new issue out this month so I’ll be holding my breath in anticipation until I can finally read it.

This series now has me in a chokehold and I am 3 seconds away from buying all the Ghüs merch I can get my hands on.

This was so heavy and beautiful.
