I asked for Queer Romance recommendation on Instagram and many recommended BETTER THAN PEOPLE and the second book in this same series. And they were not wrong. This book is AMAZING. So many different aspects of this book were perfection that I'm going to address them one by one.
WRITING STYLE: The actual prose in this book is just beautiful. This Author weaves words and imagery in a way that I really connected with. Roan Parrish writes like poetry and I loved it so much.
ANXIETY DISORDER: I have a daughter with Acute Generalized Anxiety Disorder. She began showing symptoms at 18 months and she is now 16 years old. I have a lot of 2nd hand experience with her debilitating Anxiety and I have never found a book that writes an Anxiety more faithfully than this one. It feels amazing to see it on the page. Anxiety Disorders of this magnitude are so much more than "feeling nervous" not wanting to perform karaoke, or disliking public speaking. But, so often, I find Romantic Fiction dabbling in Anxiety disorders in a way that feels very shallow. But BETTER THAN PEOPLE hits right to the core of the physicality that goes beyond shaking hands. It's vomiting and have muscle spasms. It's not being able to breath or speak or stand still. These are things I have observed as the parent of an individual with severe Anxiety and Parrish writes it beautifully and with true depth.
QUEER ROMANCE: The handling of the Queer romance aspect of this love story is perfection. There is so much intimacy and sweetness and openness. This is my first time reading descriptive sex scenes between two men and those scenes were both crazy-hot and also emotionally impactful. The physical intimacy between Jack and Simon is exactly what I want good Romance genre sex scenes to be: a balance of the physical and the emotional.
And their first kiss.....GAH! In my top 5 First Kisses in Romance of all time!
This story is achingly sweet, boldly truthful, and has stayed with me ever long after I finished reading this book. I have already recommended BETTER THAN PEOPLE to many friends and I will continue to do so! It's just so damn good.

I absolutely loved Allison Ashley's debut novel, The Perfect Distraction, so much that I was eager (but also a little scared) to read her follow-up book HOME SWEET MESS. But, oh, is it ever good. No, not "good"....FANTASTIC.
HOME SWEET MESS is a delightful Enemies-to-Lovers, teach me how to sex, friends with benefits, brother's best friend, love story. Yeah, Allison Ashley went for ALL the best tropes and nailed them ALL in one book!
Jeni is the perfect female lead. She is smart and caring and snarky and you will LOVE her! You will laugh out loud at the hate-banter between her and Logan! It was also so refreshing for a female to be the commitment-shy part of the relationship. Logan is so swoony and sweet! If you like a "reformed rake" then saddle up because Logan is the BEST. As his layers are revealed you will have no choice but to put Logan at the top of you Book Boyfriends list.
This book handles some tough topics with care and authenticity. NOTE: There is a clear Trigger Warning before the first chapter and BRAVO to the author for adding it! These tough topics never feel just thrown in for drama, instead they feel genuine and add to the characters being complex and relatable.
This author stepped up the steam from the first book and I am HERE. FOR. IT. The beautiful part is that the steamy scenes portray both the physical and emotional components of sex. The author finds the balance between lighting the reader's panties on fire and also melting their heart.
HOME SWEET MESS is a story of love and loss. Fear and family. And claiming your happiness because you deserve it. This book is funny, sweet, sexy, and full of feels. Easily one of my favorite reads of the year!
Just read this book already. You will LOVE it!!!
RATING:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
STEAM LEVEL: Rated PG-13
TRIGGERS: parent's addiction, injuries from auto accident, cancer, infertility, foster care
FEELS-O-METER: 4/5 Tackles some seriously tough topics so have tissues ready.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Who knew Public Radio could be this damn sexy? This book would fog up Ira Glass's spectacles*!
(*I tried writing "Ira Glass's eyeglasses", but you see the issue).
Once in a while a book gets so much hype and positive press that reading it is sure to be a letdown. Well, THE EX TALK lived up to the hype 100%!
Full disclosure: I am an NPR nerd. I've been to a live taping of both Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me and The Moth. I listened to Car Talk every Saturday with my husband as we ran errands in the car (I don't even care about cars). This book was like NERD HEAVEN for me! If you are not a Public Radio Nerd you won't feel lost, but there will be a few references/jokes that you likely won't get.
I loved this fresh take on Enemies to Lovers within the radio world! Shay and Dominic are perfectly perfect lead characters who are both complex, flawed, and lovable! I loved the representation in this book! Shay is Jewish (something I don't see nearly enough in Romancelandia) and Dominic is half Korean, his mother having immigrated to the US. The diversity was written perfectly. It was a factor to who these characters were, but it wasn't the ONLY factor. I think that is such a hard balance to strike and Rachel Lynn Solomon did it perfectly.
THE EX TALK also tackled some deeper topics like love after loss, grief, workplace inequality, and adult friendships. But it never felt like a "heavy read".
This book was hilarious, well-written, swoony, and engaging. Believe the hype...it is just that good.

Y'all...I used to avoid 2nd Chance Romance, but I'm really starting to like them! And DON'T LET THE MUSIC DIE is a seriously good one!
When Avery and Matt are first thrown back together, after their break up 9 years ago, the Enemies vibe is STRONG! And you KNOW that I am always here for Enemies to Lovers. These two are pissed at each other and I loved every minute of it.
I loved Matt so hard! Even when pissed, Matt shows his Cinnamon Roll Hero deliciousness. His sweet moments surrounding Avery's anxiety issues will melt-your-heart. And his own back story and insecurities are a breath of fresh air I never see in romance these days.
I loved her Avery's quirks, her work ethic, and her care for her family. I loved the portrayal of her Anxiety Disorder. It was well-written and realistic. And you know I love a book that promotes Therapy!
As these two get closer and past secrets are revealed I had a bit of a hard time with the nature of the secret. Maybe I am an unfairly judgmental a**hole...? But it's a hard one to reconcile while still loving the character. That was why I removed a star from my rating. But, YOU might have no issue with her past so ignore me and read this book!!
I especially love the male friendships within the musical group at the heart of this series! They are supportive and talk to each other while their interactions remain completely believable. There is a decent amount of teasing that goes with their supportive moments. I love these guys and can't wait for future books about each of them.

I loved this book! And I am going on record as asking-no DEMANDING—that Meghan Quinn write the romance of Luna's roommate, Farrah, because she is my favorite character and I adore her! Okay, that demand was kind of a dick move, but PRETTY PLEASE?
I've read other "TV Competition" Romances and most of them suffer from going into insanely intricate detail about the challenges and process of each item made for the challenge. And it gets to be way too much! But THE WEDDING GAME has the perfect amount of detail about the competition without it becoming the sole focus of the story.
I loved Luna and Alec! Their relationship is so fun to read as it changes from Enemies to Lovers. And This book has realistic problems that are complex (but not too heavy) that give you just enough drama to dig into while this book still being a light and fun read!
And I absolutely LOVED the LGBTQ representation in this book! Two of the three teams in this Reality Competition are same-sex couples and Meghan Quinn does NOT shy away from joking and barbing about the stereotypes surrounding the LGBTQ community! But the jokes are never at the expense of the LGBTQ couples (are that community in general). We are laughing WITH them, not at them. I snort-laughed more than once at the hilarious quips about these couples!
In the end you get a satisfyingly sweet and swoony romance that comes with the level of steam this author always brings to the table (READ: a lot of perfectly steamy steam)!
This book was a delight! Funny, fun, sexy, and smart!

I loved the premise of this story. Jia is a beauty influencer who is intrigued when a Bollywood actor slides into her DMs. They start exchanging messages and Jia is falling fast. But Dev is not on the other side of those DMs.
First, I loved having a female lead who wears a hijab! I don't see this nearly enough in contemporary romance. Jia is likable and hard working. And Dev is so sweet and such a gentleman!
This story of cat-fishing leading to love had promise, but it didn't quite come together for me.
These characters lacked chemistry for me. I've read low-steam romances with enough chemistry to make me wait until the last chapters for just a kiss and still love the book. But this book had so little chemistry that even though these two eventually consummate their relationship there was still no sizzle for me.
FIRST COMES LIKE had a lot of good pieces, but I couldn't seem to connect them together into a great reading experience.

I had to wait two days after finishing this book to write my review because MY trigger appeared in this story and I didn't see it coming. To make sure I wrote an accurate review I had to chill a bit, because this book is really, really good!
Josh is a Pro Hockey Player who survived a bad accident as a teen that has made him cautious and rather serious about life. Sara is a Social Media influencer who has built her following based on being completely real and authentic; cooking disasters, zits, and all. She is up for anything and rarely plans things out. When these two meet for an interview the sparks fly and Sara makes it her mission to coax a smile out of this grumpy hockey player.
I LOVED these characters! They are so real and flawed and wonderful! Sara is completely authentic and is always up for a new experience, but we also come to realize that she gets her feelings hurt by online trolls and feels immense pressure to deliver for her audience. Author Kelly Jamieson perfectly captures the life of a inherently cheery person who also struggles with clinical depression. Sara spoke to me because I have that same seemingly incongruent situation. I am the most upbeat, enthusiastic, happy person you have ever met who also sometimes is gripped with depression that drags me into a hole of laying in bed, overanalyzing everything, and crying. These two sides are hard to reconcile and yet completely real and Jamieson wrote it with skill and heart.
Josh is also wonderfully complex. He is giving and selfless and sweet. But as his story unfolds we come to gain clarity on a major part of his life in which he has been unable to consider anyone outside of himself. We see how, in this instance, he is selfish and stubborn, but we also understand WHY and love him more for it.
I took a star off because Sara loses her virginity in this book and it could not be any LESS realistic. I....just....*sigh* If authors want to de-virgin a leading lady in their book I just want it to be remotely realistic. Not a three orgasm, zero discomfort, let's-have-sex-4-more-times-before-the-sun-rises, situation. Listen, there doesn't have to be bleeding and tears, but COME ON.
This is the 2nd book in the series, but is excellent as a standalone. I did read the first book (and I loved it), but you really don't have to and you won't feel lost.

I loved Abby Jimenez's first two books so I wondered if LIFE'S TOO SHORT could live up to my expectations. Don't worry. It DID.
The thing that Jimenez truly excels at is shedding light on very serious and life-altering events and/or physical limitations while still delivering laughs, swoony sighs, steam, and happily ever after. LIFE'S TOO SHORT is filled with everything great that comes when Jimenez puts words to paper.
Vanessa is a YouTuber, famous for documenting her adventures as she lives life to the fullest while anticipating an genetic illness that runs in her family. She is sunshine and sweetness and hilarious! Her character is so relatable, despite being in very unrelatable circumstances (again, thanks to Jimenez and her great writing). Adrian is such a great and complex male lead. His character goes so far beyond being "grumpy" or a "workaholic". He is sweet and vulnerable and, for a lot of the book, hurt and angry. These are the kinds of characters we need. Flawed and making mistakes and trying to navigate life.
While this book was amazing, it had a few minor flaws that removed a star from my rating, the main flaw being an impossibly well-behaved baby that has only one moment of actual babyhood. This baby is pretty much Rachel's baby from "Friends". Around when she needs to add a sweet moment to the story and curiously absent or unrealistically well-behaved for 90% of it.
This book will have you laughing and crying, swooning and cheering, and thinking about your OWN life. And even though this is the third book in a series it can be read as a standalone AND it does not feel bogged down with updates on characters from previous books. You can read just this one, but SERIOUSLY....just read them all, in order. You will thank me later.

Sophie Sinclair owes my husband a beef jerky bouquet and an apology. I woke him up three different times last night because I snort laughed so loud while the poor man tried to actually sleep at 2am. He's adulty like that.
This book was not at all what I expected and it was so damn good! Lindsey is my new favorite female lead. She is quirky and hard working and neurotic and prone to drama and I could not get enough of her. I want to be her best friend, but also know I would be rolling my eyes constantly at her. She's a food critic and I almost died laughing when she was asked to eat Turtle Soup on camera. I am the same sort of ridiculous food-hypocrite as she is and I love her for it! Burgers? Sure. Turtle Soup? What?! You monster! Who would eat a little turtle?!
Nick is so cranky and broody and perfectly serious that his interactions with Lindsey are laugh-out-loud-pee-your-pants awesome! These two have chemistry for dayyyyyys! One of my favorite couples ever.
This is more than just a food-centered story. There are amazing friendships, hilarious banter, and some serious intrigue. Sophie Sinclair opens this book with a scene filled with gunshots and bombs and then takes us back a few weeks to a sweetly "normal" rom com about a girl with a travel food show. Getting from point A to point B (or should I say point B to point A back to point B?) is fun and hilarious and steamy.
I seriously loved this book! Nick and Lindsey are EVERYTHING. I want to read about every day of their lives from now until they retire. That's how perfect they are.

Hello, campfire make-out sessions! Where have you been all my life?
