Strange. Eerie. Unbelievable.
I know everyone makes different choices. And we need people who think differently. But this book made me shake my head throughout the entire story. The main character was hard to connect to because there was so many times I wanted to pull her to the side and tell her to really think about her choice.
The book was written well, with a lot of intrigue, suspense and mystery. No spoilers beyond the synopsis, but she flies across an ocean and quickly marries a man (who is on death row for mutilating and killing a young girl), and then when he gets out and treats her kind of badlyand acts creepy, she just goes along with it and asks no questions or separates herself at all from some weird things he does. She was just as stranfe as him in some regards. But the writing was good and it was enjoyable overall.
It has some twists and turns that keep you guessing and is pretty suspenseful throughout the whole story, but it was so strange? Weird? Insane? that it was hard to take seriously. I'm struggling to find the words even days after I read it. I liked the writing though but wish I had picked up one of Lloyd's other books. So I'll probably give one of her other ones a go in the future.

Slow-burning. Convoluted. Mystery.
This was different to the usual mystery/thriller/suspense novel since it had a lot more character development than plot development. The different perspectives, motives and stories bring these guests together unknowingly.
There were some pieces that seem too coincidental, but overall it was an enjoyable story! Hard to believe one human can be so disliked, but after reading this book, Foley will have you disliking the character too!!
Despite the coincidental elements, the book was a slow-burn that built to the climax and was an enjoyable read!

Steady. Building. Victory.
I don't know much about England's royal family, and definitely not what they did during WWII and so I don't know how accurate this retelling was but it was an interesting historical fiction read.
It had a steady, building pace and went through the Royal's challenges, struggles and victories throughout the late 30s and throughout the first half of the 40s.
This was an enjoyable, quick, read. It didn't delve into too much gore from the war, but did talk about bombs, internment camps, anti-Semitism and other difficult topics. Not my favourite historical fiction, but I would recommend! Especially if you are looking for a calmer or "easier" historical fiction read!

Heartbreaking. Tragic. Beautiful.
Harmel does it again! Third book by her this year and another I LOVED and will recommend. This was a beautiful historical fiction taking place in Paris as the Nazis took over and then were defeated.
It was a heart-wrenching, beautiful story that was wrapped up in such a wonderful way! I would highly recommend this read!! And when you get this one, pick up her other historical fiction The Book of Lost Names! I'm excited to read The Winemakers Wife by Harmel as well!

Decisions. Heartwarming. Beautiful.
Harmel does it again! I had really high expectations after reading her The Book of Lost Names in March, and this read did not disappoint. It was an incredibly beautiful story of life, death, time, meaning, purpose and love.
It had an easy pace, smooth flow and calm feeling. It was a quick read, but one I'm sure I'll think about for a long time. This was woven together wonderfully and created such a beautiful story.
I'm not sure what genre I would consider it... Contemplative fiction... Maybe? Is that a genre? It was a story about life. About decisions. About moving forward.
I think it was weird timing I picked it up right after The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, since there is an underlying similarity of "What if one thing had been different?" in both books. Either way they were both amazing!

Steady. Moving. Twisting.
This read was very similar to The Woman in the Window. The "unreliable woman" trope, the writing style, the flow, even the twist felt the same. So I saw the ending coming. But I would recommend this one over The Woman in the Window for sure!
It had good flow, steady build, and a good conclusion. I thought the passing train and how much she sees was a little unrealistic, but plausible enough for the plot to be engaging. The multiple points of view definitely added to the story as well; I liked that element.
Let me know if you've read it and if so, your thoughts!

Devastation. Light. Hope.
This read was a very quick, intense story. The main character is a nurse in the maternity ward in 1918. Between the war and a terrible flu, she's struggling to help her patients.
The story was captivating, quick-paced and really had the reader understanding the intensity of the situation.
The writing style was not for me though. The book has no chapters, it's just broken into four parts, so the "chapters" are really long with no breaks. I think the shortest one was sixty pages. Much too long for me! I prefer having breaks, which probably would have made the story more captivating since there were great plot points to hook the reader on and have them guessing what happens had a chapter ended there. Also, not using quotation marks was frustrating. Sometimes the speech is on its own line, but other times in the middle of a paragraph which really bothered me.
That being said, the story itself was good, lots of situations going on to keep the reader hooked! I did like how Donoghue broke it into parts, it gave away some of the story but I thought it was a nice added touch. Overall, I would recommend!

Captivating. Suspenseful. Gripping.
Right from the start, I was hooked! A bold beginning that doesn't let up. The intertwining timelines really worked in this read! There was constantly pieces being added to the mystery that made it captivating right through. The single perspective was good too, it worked well for the story.
I was worried about 3/5 of the way in that it was going to get really weird, but it ended up with a great twist! I really enjoyed this read!!
This was my first Riley Sager book and will definitely not be my last!! I'm looking forward to getting more of his from the library!

Steady. Building. Rising.
The style of this book was written in parts, broken down into chapters about the different characters. This was an interesting way to tell the story about labour in the early 1900s since the different parties all had a different view.
This book was well-written. It was different than I was expecting, but it was good! It got better for me throughout. It was slow, but worth sticking to once it all came together.
This is definitely my area of interest! Labour relations, unionization, employment and so on. I took a lot of courses studying this from an academic viewpoint and this read was really enjoyable seeing it from another couple (although fictional) views. I thought it was well done!
If you're looking for a historical fiction taking place in western America, with a focus on the struggle to have the rights employees and labourers have today - this is your book!
I wish it delved a little more into the specifics of the battles and some wins that different unions had, and the direct effect of it being the masses forcing the few to make the legal changes, but the point was still there.

Thank you Penguin Randomhouse Canada and Goodreads for my copy of this book!!
Suspenseful. Captivating. Gripping.
This book hooked me 30 pages in and didn't let go! It was captivating and enjoyable the whole way through.
I had high hopes since I've read many legal thrillers by John Grisham and Michael Connelly - which set my legal thriller expectatjons high! I was not disappointed by Abrams' work! Easily comparable to Grisham or Connelly, closer to Grisham.
This standalone moved quickly, with enough character detail to inform you without bogging you down. The pace was fast, light and expectant. There was a few different storylines coming together and the ending wrapped them up succinctly and completely.
This was a very engaging read. If you are in a slump, need something lighter, or are looking for a suspenseful, fast moving contemporary fiction then be sure to pick this up!
It's out May 25th!
