Wow. I saw the movie first. I KNOW the book is always better. But DAMN! So moving, and beautiful, and RELEVANT. I wish everyone in America would read this. As a white woman, it forced me to think about my white privilege, and contemplate the responsibility I have to acknowledge the experience of black Americans today. I love Star, I love her family, I love this book! I cried and cried and cried. But it wasn’t just some depressing reflection of our current “cultural norms”, it gave me HOPE. And what do we have at all, if not for hope?

I loved this book! I highly recommend the audiobook, it is well done and gives you the effect of a podcast.

The story was wonderfully woven and delightfully deceiving!

My one qualm....THE AMOUNT OF TIMES THE WORD “TIMBER” was used!!!! Holy hell! Say, tree! Bench! Wooden railing! If I were to count them I imagine it would be at least 30 times. At first it was just slightly odd, then daunting, then DOWNRIGHT ANTAGONIZING.

Other than that, I absolutely loved this book.

This was definitely a slow starter for me. It was told with multiple perspectives and multiple timelines which could have contributed to that initial confusion. It took me probably half of the book to connect to the characters and begin to become invested in their individual plights. I considered giving up, but I’d heard such great things about this book that I had to push through. And I’m glad I did. The second half was rife with perfectly tied ribbons of drama. Little details were threaded together and elegantly woven into the plot. I was definitely surprised by a couple of the reveals. I felt like I should have seen it coming, but Foley does a great job of setting up red herrings and misleading the reader. I also appreciated the ghostly vibes of the island. Overall, a really great fall read!
