Alice Austen Lived Here by Alex Gino

Absolutely loved this book and plan to possibly include it in my children’s literature course in the future. It’s my second read by Alex Gino ( also love “Melissa ). It was refreshing to read a story based on a true historical figure told through the eyes of two youths whom identify as non-binary. Gino writes, “Blood may be thicker than water, but shared community and experience are thicker than both.” In their Author’s Note, they write “I hope this book helps show that queer and trans people are everywhere, come from everywhere, and have always been everywhere.” Fantastic read!
A Song for You: My Life with Whitney Houston by Robyn Crawford

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book after seeing the Whitney movie in the theater. Crawford’s writing style was easy to read. I’d like to point out that this account of Whitney’s ups and downs aligns nicely to events in the movie. After reading this book, I’m humbled by Robyn’s heart felt account of her relationship with Whitney. This isn’t a tabloid read, but a sensitive, carefully put together story of what once was a beautiful friendship turned volatile due to drugs and Whitney’s greedy family. I’m happy Crawford got the healing she needed. This is a must read for any Whitney fan.
Remembering Whitney: My Story of Love, Loss, and the Night the Music Stopped by Cissy Houston

This was a quick read during a trip to Atlanta on my February vacation. I chose to read it after Robyn Crawford’s book. It was easy to read. It included lots of personal stories I didn’t know before. I enjoyed that it also included an account of Cissy’s upbringing and successful career, too. Whether or not all stories are true, as a Whitney fan I believe I got a behind the scenes account of her personality, hopes, fears, faith, struggle and triumph.
