Finally starting my reread so I can catch up with the newer releases. It’s been over a decade since I’ve read this series and truly I feel like I love it even more now as an adult.

The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

This might make me psychotic but I would’ve given it a full 5⭐️ if the epilogue didn’t exist lol
Binding 13 by Chloe Walsh
Did not finish book. Stopped at 13%.
Shannon has been called small/tiny/underdeveloped REPEATEDLY I kid you not. More than 5 times in 2 pages.
Shannon also makes a point to describe herself as looking prepubescent, and Johnny also implies thus numerous times…BUT THEN SHE IS HEAVILY SEXUALIZED

THIS is exactly what we mean when YA fantasy books can be enjoyed by literally almost EVERY age group. The themes of grief, generational trauma, and systemic racism intertwined with a unique King Arthur retelling was incredible. I feel like I need to learn more about the King Arthur lore though in order to fully appreciate the nuances of this magic system 😂 I’ll definitely be researching before jumping into book 2
To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose

Anequs is the girl that every FMC aspires to be!
I really enjoyed many aspects of this book, especially the emphasis on indigenous characters and culture (obviously).
The plot was interesting, and it definitely walked the line of realism vs. fantasy. I think this was done very purposefully to emphasize that although this is a fantasy novel, the societal critiques are very much rooted in reality.
I feel like if this were shorter, it would be a 5 ⭐️ read for me but I’m definitely in the minority of those who think this! I was just starting to disengage a lot in the middle.
One other thing that I really enjoyed was how the stories that the characters told were formatted as separate chapters. This gave a very immersive feel and definitely pulled me back in.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

I’m struggling with myself on how I felt about this book as a whole. I loved the first 15-20%, the ending was good (although tragic), and I loved the main themes of this retelling. However, the bulk of the middle portion was SO incredibly difficult for me to get through, so much so I almost DNF’d. I understand why people love this book, I just personally was taken out of the story too many times and was bored for far too long to give this a higher rating…
It kind of hurts to do this but my gut is giving this a 2.75⭐️, don’t hate me
